Hello everyone,
I once promised you one thing, I will review another book from an Indonesian revolutionary, Tan Malaka. The book has been on my bookshelf for a long time, almost worn out and eaten by time. This book is entitled:

From Prison to Prison - Tan Malaka

A book that immediately amazed me with the thoughts of the revolutionary, even though he was behind bars, his thoughts were poured out and conveyed until now. Truly a hero who acts with his thoughts poured out and also becomes the spirit to become a free person.

In this book, there are so many meanings, perspectives and thoughts that are very different from Tan Malaka. He wrote so many stories of his life, this book falls into an autobiography of Tan Malaka. Many people say that this book makes a lot of contributions to the idea of nationalism and changes the perspective of people who read it.

From this book, we know that there is someone who is great because of his ideas, because of his thoughts and also because of his fighting spirit to be free from colonialism. Basically, Tan Malaka really wants us to understand the true meaning of 'freedom'.

The words spoken by Tan Malaka; 'Whoever wants to be free, must be willing to be in prison'. From this sentence, an implied meaning is that freedom must be fought for even though we will encounter obstacles or something we don't want, such as being shackled in prison, until we basically know the true meaning of 'Freedom'.

This autobiography of Tan Malaka teaches many things, starting from his journey against imperialism and also his journey from prison to prison because of his idealism and ideas which were considered rebellious. That is what made Tan Malaka able to be firm against the colonization of human rights.

In this book, there are many pages, 560 pages about the story of Tan Malaka's journey which is able to make people afraid of his broad and rebellious thoughts. Because, Tan Malaka became a strong person not because he was good at shooting or attacking with weapons, but his thoughts that were able to move others because of it. For that, many people were afraid of Tan Malaka who was finally put in prison so that he could not move, however, it was not easy, instead Tan Malaka wrote many books and letters that moved other people with Tan Malaka's books.

In this book there are also many fun stories about how Tan Malaka became a human being who prioritized human rights to be independent, not just independent because of colonization, but something bigger than that.

Tan Malaka wrote many important stories of his life here, how his suffering did not make his spirit collapse, but rather filled him up again to win against anything that made humans not independent, that's Tan Malaka.

A book that I think is very fun to read, adds knowledge and ideas about the meaning of 'Freedom'.

It is impressive to see how someone can leave such a powerful legacy, even from prison. The quote you mention resonates deeply, showing that true freedom is earned with sacrifices. Also, 560 pages of reflections and experiences sound like a roller coaster of emotions and learnings.

the legacy he left for many generations and also a country. He made a lot of impact on many people.

I find him interesting mainly due to his track record and turned into a marxist.

I wonder what makes his communism different from typical asian communism back in the day. Take it for example, the Vietnamese and their communism. Also he once argued that islam could co-exist with communism but at the same time, historically it was also the Islamic groups that eventually took parts in killing the communist supporters 😅. I am sure he also received opposition from the typical european communist at the time.

Either way, nice review 😄

There are many things that I think are in line with yours. It is still a mystery how Tan Malaka really thinks. There should be more books from him that I should read.

I found out several books about Tan Malaka on Ipusnas but it's totally different from your books before it. Because of you, my october my be full of history and figure on it.

Really? why is it different? is there another reason? this is a book that my friend gave me when I was in college. I want to find another one and definitely Tan Malaka's collection.
