Hello everyone, my reading fanatic friends.. I hope you are doing great today.. on this occasion, I want to share with you all a new review, today I will talk about the novel: Agatha Rising and the Quiche of Death, written by M.C. Beaton. And well, to start, let me tell you that it is one of the most welcoming mysteries you will ever read, it feels very light, but at the same time entertaining.. honestly, it gave me exactly what I needed, I read it a few months ago and although I don't consider it to be a revolutionary masterpiece, it is funny, witty and a little ridiculous in the best sense of the word. The story begins with Agatha Rising, a 53-year-old woman who doesn't beat around the bush, she is used to the noise of London.. she is impulsive, determined and has a sharp, almost abrasive sense of humor, which is curiously endearing and funny, this woman decides to leave behind her successful career in public relations to retire in peace to a quiet, slightly more rural countryside. Except, surprise, she's absolutely terrible at that "quiet life" thing; within days she's bored to death and plans to draw attention to herself in her new community by entering a quiche contest; sounds harmless enough, right?
But no, the quiche she presents is store-bought.. and she ends up poisoning the judge, yes, someone dies... and Agatha is at the center of all this drama... What really hooked me was the writing style, the author has a unique way of keeping things light and humorous at the same time, without ever losing sight of the central mystery, the book isn't trying to be a dark or gloomy thriller, it's a full-blown cozy mystery... and you as the reader begin to understand perfectly what they mean by this. I thought the pacing was great, it starts off slow, allowing you to soak up the quirky atmosphere of the small town, but once the murder happens, it picks up speed nicely, haha, without feeling rushed.. Agatha's antics, from interrogating the neighbors to executing big, absurd plans, keep the narrative super lively and above all unpredictable... which I loved.
Hola a todos, amigos fanáticos de la lectura.. espero que hoy estén super bien.. en esta ocasión, quiero compartir con todos ustedes una nueva reseña, hoy les hablaré de la novela: Agatha Rising and the Quiche of Death, escrita por M.C. Beaton. Y bueno, para empezar, déjenme decirles que es uno de los misterios más acogedores que podrán leer, se siente muy ligero, pero a la vez entretenido.. sinceramente, me entregó exactamente lo que necesitaba, lo leí hace algunos meses y aunque no considero que sea una obra maestra revolucionaria, es divertida, ingeniosa y un poco ridícula en el mejor sentido de la palabra. La historia comienza con Agatha Rising, una mujer de 53 años que no se anda con rodeos, ella está acostumbrada al ruido de Londres.. es impulsiva, decidida y tiene un humor agudo, casi abrasivo, que resulta curiosamente entrañable y divertido, está mujer decide dejar atrás su exitosa carrera en relaciones públicas para retirarse en paz a un tranquilo campo un poco más rural. excepto que, sorpresa, es absolutamente terrible con eso de una "vida tranquila" en pocos días se aburre mortalmente y planea llamar la atención de su nueva comunidad participando en un concurso de quiches, suena muy inofensivo, ¿verdad?
Pero no, la quiche que presenta es comprada.. y termina envenenando al juez, sí, alguien muere.. y Agatha está en el centro de todo este drama.. Lo que realmente me enganchó fue el estilo de escritura, la autora tiene una manera única de mantener las cosas ligeras y a la vez humorísticas, sin perder de vista nunca el misterio central, el libro no intenta ser un thriller oscuro o sombrío, es un misterio acogedor a toda regla.. y tú como lector vas entendiendo perfectamente a que se refieren con esto. El ritmo me pareció genial, comienza lento, permitiéndote absorber el ambiente peculiar del pequeño pueblo, pero una vez que ocurre el asesinato, acelera de manera genial, jaja, sin sentirse apresurado.. las travesuras de Agatha, desde interrogar a los vecinos hasta ejecutar grandes planes absurdos, mantienen la narrativa super animada y sobre todo impredecible...cosa que me encantó.
Telling you a little bit about Agatha, she's not your typical classic detective story heroine, she's a gruff, selfish at times, and somewhat out of place woman, trying to fit in with the refined villagers... but that's exactly what makes her so real, she's an imperfect lady, and you can't help but root for her as she stumbles along her way as an amateur detective. There's a certain vulnerability beneath her tough facade, which peeks out at times when she feels alone, or at those moments when she doubts herself and her abilities... it's precisely all these layers that make her such a captivating character, plus, her interactions with the villagers, like Mrs. Bloxby or the skeptical police officer Bill Wong, are pure gold.
The supporting characters here are a mix of charming, eccentric and yet suspicious, which keeps you constantly guessing who might be hiding something. The book explores classic mystery territory, small town secrets, the desire to belong, the unique contrast between appearances and reality. It’s not particularly deep, but I really don’t think it needs to be, the charm of this story lies in how it balances humor and mystery. One minute you can be laughing at Agatha’s ridiculous plans, and the next you’re piecing together the views on this murder with her. It’s like Agatha Christie meets your grandmother, the one who tells inappropriate jokes and is extremely funny. All that absurdity adds a sweet flavor, there were definitely some unique moments, like Agatha’s first attempt to blend in with the villagers. It really made me laugh out loud. As for the killer reveal, I will say that I was satisfied. It’s not too predictable, but obviously I won’t spoil it for you at all.
Hablándoles un poco sobre Agatha, ella no es la típica heroína clásica de las historias de detectives, es una mujer brusca, egoísta a veces, y algo desubicada, sobre cómo encajar con los refinados aldeanos.. pero es justamente eso lo que la hace tan real, es una señora imperfecta, y no puedes evitar apoyarla mientras tropieza en su camino como detective aficionada. Hay cierta vulnerabilidad debajo de su dura fachada, que se asoma en momentos en los que se siente sola, o en aquellos momentos en los que duda de sí misma y en sus capacidades.. justamente son todas estas capas las que la convierten en un personaje tan cautivador, además, sus interacciones con los habitantes del pueblo, como la señora Bloxby o el escéptico oficial de la policía Bill Wong, son oro puro.
Aquí los personajes secundarios son una mezcla de encantadores, excéntricos y a la vez sospechosos, lo que te mantiene adivinando constantemente quién podría estar ocultando algo.. el libro explora territorios clásicos de los misterios, secretos de pueblos muy pequeños, el deseo de pertenencia, el contraste único entre las apariencias y la realidad.. no es particularmente profundo, pero realmente yo creo que no necesitas serlo, el encanto de esta historia radica en cómo equilibra el humor y el misterio. Un minuto puedes estar riéndote con los planes ridículos de Agatha, y el siguiente estás juntando junto con ella las vistas sobre este asesinato.. es como si Agatha Christie se mezclará con tu abuela, la que dice chistes inapropiados y es sumamente graciosa.. todo ese toque absurdo añade un dulce sabor, definitivamente hubo algunos momentos únicos, como el primer intento de Agatha por integrarse con los aldeanos.. realmente me hizo reír a carcajadas. En cuanto a la revelación del asesino, diré que me sentí satisfecho.. no es demasiado predecible, pero obviamente no se los arruinaré para nada.
That being said, I do feel that there were a few things that could have been developed in a better way, for one, the mystery itself isn't the most complex, obviously... I would have liked it if it was more... exciting, or complicated, or went a little deeper, if you're an experienced mystery reader I think you could easily figure out who did it before the big reveal, also, while I found Agatha's character fascinating, some of the secondary characters, while I thought they were great, felt very underdeveloped... I wanted a lot more depth to them, especially since the town is a central part of the story, and I feel like if they had gone a bit deeper into their relationships or their pasts, it would have made it all more interesting.
I think this book is dedicated to anyone who enjoys mysteries and wants to relax for a while and have fun, if you as a reader need a light and super entertaining read, then I highly recommend it... if you are a fan of Agatha Christie, but you want something less intense and much more humorous, then this is the perfect book for you, I also think it's ideal if you're in the mood to quickly delve into a story that may not be the most tragic or serious, but that can certainly make you have a good time in those moments when you're doing nothing. Of course, to avoid being disappointed, I recommend that you do not expect an extremely complex story... my rating is not a 4/5 stars, it is not a perfect book, but I found it very funny... it is a character that you will not forget, at least I will not, I am looking forward to getting into her other adventures. Dicho esto, yo considero que hubo algunas cosas que podrían haberse desarrollado de una mejor manera, por un lado, el misterio en sí no es el más complejo, obviamente.. me fuera gustado si fuera mas.. emocionante o complicado, o fuera algo más profundo, si eres un lector experimentado de misterios, creo que podrías descubrir fácilmente quién lo hizo antes de la gran revelación, además, aunque el personaje de Agatha me pareció fascinante, algunos de los personajes secundarios, aunque me parecieron geniales, se sintieron muy poco desarrollados.. quería mucha más profundidad en ellos, especialmente porque el pueblo es una parte central de la historia, y siento que si hubieran profundizado un poco más en sus relaciones o en sus pasados, todo hubiera sido más interesante.
Creo que este libro está dedicado a cualquiera que disfrute de los misterios y quiera relajarse un rato y divertirse, si tú como lector necesitas una lectura ligera y súper entretenida, pues te la recomiendo mucho.. si eres fanático de Agatha Christie, pero quieres algo menos intenso y mucho más humorístico, pues este es el libro perfecto para ti, también creo que es ideal si estás de humor para adentrarte rápidamente en una historia que tal vez no sea la más trágica o seria, pero que sin duda te puede hacer pasar un buen rato en esos momentos en los que estás sin hacer nada. Eso sí, para evitar no decepcionarse, les recomiendo que no vayan a esperar una historia sumamente compleja.. mi calificación es un 4/5 estrellas, no es un libro perfecto, pero me pareció muy divertido.. es un personaje que no olvidarás, al menos yo no lo haré, estoy ansioso por adentrarme a sus otras aventuras. La mezcla de humor y misterio es simplemente perfecta.. bueno, esto sería todo por hoy, cuéntenme si conocían esta historia y qué opinan al respecto.. nos veremos en las otras reseñas.
