Hello to all my friends, reading fans, I hope you are doing great today, this time I want to talk to you about a new book, and I was very pleasantly surprised, and at the same time it left me with a mixture of emotions that I am not processing yet. It is almost indescribable, but I will do my best to transmit to all of you my opinions... today I will talk about the book: I Gave You Eyes And You Looked Toward Darkness, by the author Irene Solá. So, where do I start? This story feels as if the author herself has taken a piece of the darkness itself, kneaded it with Catalan folklore and eaten it, and then vomited out a story that doesn't let go at any moment, and has that unique feeling, capable of disconcerting you, scaring you, and at the same time captivating you.
Surely many of you from time to time are going to need a break, because it happened to me, I need it too... if you are one of those who are looking for something completely different from the usual, this work can be a real treasure. From the beginning, the atmosphere of the novel is brutally engaging, a lost house in the Catalan mountains, a lineage cursed by a pact with the devil, and an old woman on her last day of life surrounded by the voices of dead women who preceded her. What a way to hook... the darkness and rawness of the narrative is not for everyone, we are talking about descriptions that include blood, feces and semen... all of this creates such an intense sensory experience that you can almost smell the rot and feel the weight of the centuries and centuries of curse that these women carry. . the author's writing is an emotional whirlwind, her prose seemed rushed to me, without pause, mixing past, present and future in a chaos that can make you dizzy at first, but makes perfect sense at the end.
It's like putting together a puzzle in which you don't know what the complete picture is until you put the last piece in... that different mix of times and perspectives I also feel gives a magical touch to the story, it's as if we as readers are caught in a spell. But beware, it is not an easy read, it requires a lot of attention and a lot of patience, because a narrative can feel confusing and developed in many moments... even so, when everything fits together, it becomes almost like a revelation.
Hola a todos amigos fanáticos de las lecturas, espero que hoy estén super bien, en esta ocasión quiero hablarles de un nuevo libro, y es que me sorprendió muy gratamente, a la vez que me dejó con una mezcla de emociones que aún no estoy procesando. Es casi indescriptible, pero haré mi mejor esfuerzo para transmitirles a todos ustedes mis opiniones.. hoy les hablaré del libro: I Gave You Eyes And You Looked Toward Darkness, de la autora Irene Solá. Y bueno, ¿por dónde empiezo? Esta historia se siente como si la misma autora hubiera tomado un pedazo de la oscuridad misma, lo hubiese amasado con folklore catalán y comido, para luego vomitar una historia que no te suelta en ningún momento, y tiene esa sensación única, capaz de desconcertarte, asustarte, y a la vez cautivarte.
Seguramente muchos de ustedes de vez en cuando van a necesitar un respiro, porque me pasó, yo también lo necesito.. si eres de los que buscan algo completamente diferente a lo habitual, esta obra puede ser un verdadero tesoro. Desde el principio, la atmósfera de la novela es brutalmente atractiva, una casa perdida en las montañas catalanas, un linaje maldito por un pacto con el diablo, y una anciana en su último día de vida rodeada por las voces de mujeres muertas que la precedieron. Qué manera de enganchar.. la oscuridad y la crudeza de la narrativa no son aptas para cualquiera, estamos hablando de descripciones que incluyen sangre, heces y semen.. todo esto crea una experiencia sensorial tan intensa que casi puedes oler la putrefacción y sentir el peso de los siglos y siglos de maldición que cargan estas mujeres.. la escritura de la autora es un torbellino emocional, su prosa me pareció apresurada, sin pausas, mezclando pasados, presentes y futuros en un caos que al principio te puede marear, pero que al final cobra mucho sentido.
Es como armar un rompecabezas en el que no sabes cuál es la imagen completa hasta que pones la última pieza.. esa mezcla diferente de tiempos y perspectivas también siento que le da un toque mágico a la historia, es como si nosotros como lectores estuviéramos atrapados en un hechizo. Pero ojo, no es una lectura fácil, requiere de mucha atención y mucha paciencia, porque una narrativa puede sentirse confusa y desarrollada en muchos momentos.. aun así, cuando todo encaja, llega a ser casi como una revelación.
The female characters are the heart and soul of this story, from Joana, the matriarch who made this blissful pact with the devil, to Bernadette, the old woman on her deathbed, and the other women are also incredibly developed.. it's interesting to see a story where each woman is marked by a curse in some way, they are missing something, whether it's a tongue, an ear, or even their eyelashes.. it's kind of haunting, but it grabs you at the same time. One of the things that really makes this story memorable is its authenticity.. through the voices of these women, this author explores unique themes such as motherhood, marriage, sex and forgetting...all wrapped up in a ghostly atmosphere, the voices of the dead women narrating the story are a brilliant and original device that makes you reflect a lot on the weight of the past and memory.
Also this book has moments that left me speechless, like a party that includes the ancestors... I found it all very crazy and disturbing, it is a grotesque scene and at the same time beautiful... it is strange to describe, it is full of symbolism and at the same time loaded with many emotions. These kinds of situations make the story feel alive, as if you were reading something that breathes and throbs... it must be said that the complexity of the narrative, as I said, can be a spectacle for some readers... Sometimes I found myself re-reading some paragraphs to understand a little bit who was talking at that moment, or also to try to know in which moment of the story was being placed.. also, although I appreciate the rich lyricism of the author, there are moments in which the prose feels too overloaded, almost to the point of distracting from the plot.. it confuses you and makes you feel strange for those things.
Los personajes femeninos son el alma de esta historia, desde Joana, la matriarca que hizo este dichoso pacto con el diablo, hasta Bernadette, la anciana en su lecho de muerte, y las demás mujeres también están increíblemente desarrolladas.. es interesante ver una historia donde cada mujer está marcada por una maldición de alguna forma, les falta algo, ya sea una lengua, una oreja, o incluso las pestañas.. es algo inquietante, pero te atrapa al mismo tiempo. Una de las cosas que realmente hace memorable a esta historia es su autenticidad.. a través de las voces de estas mujeres, esta autora explora temas únicos como la maternidad, el matrimonio, el sexo y el olvido.. todo envuelto en una atmósfera fantasmagórica, las voces de las mujeres muertas narrando la historia son un recurso brillante y original que te hace reflexionar mucho sobre el peso del pasado y la memoria.
También este libro tiene momentos que me dejaron boquiabierto, como una fiesta que incluye a las antepasadas.. me pareció todo muy loco y inquietante, es una escena grotesca y a la vez hermosa.. es extraño de describir, está llena de simbolismo y a la vez cargada de muchas emociones. Este tipo de situaciones que hacen que la historia se sienta viva, como si estuvieras leyendo algo que respira y palpita.. eso sí, hay que decir que la complejidad de la narrativa, como les decía, puede ser un espectáculo para algunos lectores.. A veces me encontré releyendo algunos párrafos para entender un poco quién estaba hablando en ese momento, o también para tratar de saber en qué momento de la historia se estaba situando.. además, aunque aprecio el rico lirismo de la autora, hay momentos en los que la prosa se siente demasiado recargada, casi al punto de distraer de la trama.. te confunde y te sientes extraño por aquellas cosas.
I can't help but compare this novel to Gabriel Garcia Marquez's 100 Years of Solitude... they both share elements like the family story through time, a house that seems like just another character, and all the mystical and dark realism, but where Garcia Marquez is hyperbolic and poetic, Irene is grotesque and visceral... plus, here women have a central role, something that sets it apart and makes it stand out that much more. If you like dark stories, complex and full of symbolism, this book is ideal for you, I would also recommend it to those who enjoy magical realism and grotesque, with very dark twists that make your hair stand on end. But if you have a weak stomach or prefer more linear or simple narratives, you might want to think twice... but I find it to be a very rewarding experience.
It's unique, and its ability to blend folklore, darkness and human emotions leaves you thinking long after you've finished reading it, it really surprised me in inexplicable ways, and that's exactly why I give it a 4.7/5 star rating, because, although it's a brilliant work, its narrative can be a bit hard to follow. However, it is a truly worthwhile journey for those who dare to venture into the darkness... and well, that would be all for today. No puedo evitar comparar esta novela con 100 años de soledad de Gabriel García Márquez.. ambos comparten elementos como la historia familiar a través del tiempo, una casa que parece un personaje más, y todo el realismo místico y oscuro, pero donde García Márquez es hiperbólico y poético, Irene es grotesca y visceral.. además, aquí las mujeres tienen un papel central, algo que la diferencia y la hace destacar mucho más. Si te gustan las historias oscuras, complejas y llenas de simbolismo, este libro es ideal para ti, también lo recomendaría a quienes disfrutan del realismo mágico y grotesco, con giros muy sombríos que te ponen los pelos de punta. Pero si eres de estómago débil o prefieres narrativas más lineales o simples, quizás deberías pensarla dos veces.. pero considero que es una experiencia muy gratificante.
Es única, y su capacidad para mezclar folclor, oscuridad y emociones humanas te deja pensando mucho tiempo después de haber terminado de leerlo, realmente me sorprendió de maneras inexplicables, y justo por eso les doy una calificación de 4.7/5 estrellas, porque, aunque es una obra brillante, su narrativa puede ser un poco difícil de seguir. Sin embargo, es un viaje que realmente vale la pena para quienes se atrevan a adentrarse en las tinieblas.. y bueno, esto sería todo por hoy.
