Hello everyone, dear Hive reading community... I hope you are feeling great today. On this occasion, I want to share with you a new review with my opinions of the following novel, titled: My Dark Vanessa, written by Elizabeth Russell. This debut novel tackles very complex issues with a really powerful and nuanced narrative.. the story follows Vanessa White in two timelines: as a 15 year old boarding school student who becomes involved in an intimate relationship with her 42 year old teacher, and we are also introduced to the version of her as a 32 year old woman dealing with the fallout of this relationship in the midst of the MeToo movement.
The author handles the subject of abuse and manipulation with a deftness that I find impressive, the narrative does not fall into simplifications or moral judgments, but rather allows the reader to immerse themselves in the complex psychology of our protagonist. Through her perspective, we experience the confusion, desire, sadness and guilt that characterize her relationship with her teacher. What makes this book so shocking is the way in which the whole process of grooming and manipulation is portrayed to us, there is no clear line between consent, which makes for uncomfortable but really necessary reading, the author managed to make the reader understand how Vanessa can see their relationship as a simple romance, while simultaneously allowing us to see all the underlying abuse.

En esta ocasión, les quiero compartir una nueva reseña con mis opiniones de la siguiente novela, titulada: My Dark Vanessa, escrita por Elizabeth Russell. Esta novela debut aborda temas muy complejos con una narrativa realmente poderosa y matizada.. la historia sigue a Vanessa White en dos líneas temporales: como una estudiante de 15 años en un internado que se involucra en una relación íntima con su profesor de 42 años, y también nos presentan la versión de ella como una mujer de 32 años lidiando con las consecuencias de esta relación en medio del movimiento Me Too.
La autora maneja el tema del abuso y la manipulación con una destreza que me parece impresionante, la narrativa no cae en simplificaciones ni juicios morales, sino que permite al lector sumergirse en la psicología compleja de nuestro protagonista. A través de su perspectiva, experimentamos la confusión, el deseo, la tristeza y la culpa que caracterizan la relación con su profesor. Lo que hace que este libro sea tan impactante es la forma en la que se nos retrata todo el proceso de grooming y manipulación, no hay una línea clara entre el consentimiento, lo que hace que la lectura sea incómoda pero realmente necesaria, la autora logró que el lector entienda cómo Vanessa puede ver su relación como un simple romance, mientras que simultáneamente nos permite ver todo el abuso que hay subyacente.
The writing of this entire story alternating between past and present is very effective in showing us how Vanessa's teenage expectations and experiences continue to affect her entire adult life, watching a Vanessa struggle with her perception of the relationship as new accusations arise against this man is heartbreaking and frustrating, but also deeply human. Russell, the author, offers no easy answers or perfect resolutions, instead showing us a more nuanced exploration of issues such as consent, power, and the importance of memory...the way the whole movement of cancellation towards abusers and its complications is addressed is particularly interesting.
I found all of the author's prose to be solid, I think she captures all of the teenage emotions of the protagonist very vividly, as well as all of the confusion and pain of adulthood. There are moments of beauty in her writing that contrast with the whole disturbing premise, creating quite a complex and often disturbing reading experience, however, for me I feel that this story is not without flaws. At times, especially in the second half of the book, the narrative sometimes seems to stagnate, although this could be interpreted as a reflection of Vanessa's own stagnation, if we think about it.
Another thing, some scenes are described in a graphic way, and these can be triggering for certain types of readers, so it is important to approach this story with caution.. as it is about making this type of abuse visible, telling it in the most realistic and raw way possible. And that's exactly what makes it so necessary.
La escritura de toda esta historia alternando entre el pasado y el presente es muy efectiva para mostrarnos como las expectativas y las experiencias del adolescente de Vanessa continúan afectando toda su vida adulta, ver a una Vanessa luchar con su percepción de la relación a medida que surgen nuevas acusaciones contra este hombre es desgarrador y frustrante, pero también profundamente humano. Russell, la autora, no ofrece respuestas fáciles ni resoluciones perfectas, en cambio, nos muestra una exploración más matizada de temas como el consentimiento, el poder y la importancia de la memoria.. la forma en que se aborda todo el movimiento de cancelación hacia los abusadores y sus complicaciones es particularmente interesante.
Toda la prosa de la autora me pareció sólida, creo que captura con mucha intensidad todas las emociones adolescentes de la protagonista, como también toda la confusión y el dolor de la edad adulta. Hay momentos de belleza en su escritura que contrastan con toda la premisa perturbadora, creando una experiencia de lectura bastante compleja y a menudo inquietante, sin embargo, para mí siento que esta historia no está libre de fallos. En algunas ocasiones, especialmente en la segunda mitad del libro, la narrativa a veces parece estancarse, aunque esto podría interpretarse como un reflejo del propio estancamiento de Vanessa, si lo pensamos bien.
Otra cosa, algunas escenas son descritas de manera gráfica, y estas pueden ser desencadenantes para cierto tipo de lectores, por lo que es importante abordar esta historia con precaución.. ya que se trata de hacer visible este tipo de abuso, relatándolo de la manera más realista y cruda posible. Y es justo eso lo que lo hace muy necesaria.
The author of this book has created a portrait full of trauma and you sense all of its aftermath, this can easily teach you new things about what abuse and consent is. Personally, I found this book very valuable today for the times we live in, the way Vanessa's confusion and denial is portrayed seemed painfully realistic to me. There were times when I simply wanted to hug Vanessa and times when I felt my heart break for her, the complexity of her emotions and her struggle to overcome her past, try to move on seemed very authentic to me.
What struck me most was how the book made us question some assumptions we surely each had, I found myself reflecting on all the subtle ways in which power and manipulation can manifest in many relationships and how the narratives we construct about our experiences can be both protective and damaging. I found the ending of this story appropriate and hopeful, it reflects the reality of what is healing in process. Overall, I give My Dark Vanessa a rating of 4.5/5.
It is a book that can certainly stay with you for a long time and one that I think generates a lot of important conversations, it is not an easy read because of the issues it deals with, but it is a reminder that it is always important to raise our voices about all abusers and that there are always ways to deal with difficult situations, it is always necessary to question our own perceptions. Elizabeth Russell has created a truly impressive piece of work that promises to be the start of a remarkable literary career...and well, that's about it. La autora de este libro ha creado un retrato lleno de trauma y se percibe todas sus secuelas, esto fácilmente puede enseñarte cosas nuevas sobre lo que es el abuso y el consentimiento.. Personalmente, encontré este libro muy valioso en la actualidad para los tiempos en los que vivimos, la forma en la que se retrata la confusión y la negación de Vanessa me pareció dolorosamente realista. Hubo momentos en los que simplemente quería abrazar a Vanessa y momentos en los que sentí que mi corazón se rompía por ella, la complejidad de sus emociones y su lucha por superar su pasado, tratar de seguir adelante me pareció muy auténtico.
Lo más que me impresionó fue cómo el libro nos hizo cuestionar algunas suposiciones que seguramente cada uno de nosotros teníamos, me encontré reflexionando sobre todas las formas sutiles en las que el poder y la manipulación pueden manifestarse en muchas relaciones y cómo las narrativas que construimos sobre nuestras experiencias pueden ser tanto protectoras como dañinas. El final de esta historia me pareció apropiado y esperanzador, refleja la realidad de lo que es una curación en proceso. En general, yo le doy a My Dark Vanessa una calificación de 4.5/5.
Es un libro que seguramente puede quedarse contigo durante mucho tiempo y que creo que genera muchas conversaciones importantes, no es una lectura fácil debido a los temas que trata, pero es un recordatorio de que siempre es importante levantar la voz sobre todos los abusadores y que siempre hay maneras de enfrentar situaciones difíciles, siempre es necesario cuestionar nuestras propias percepciones. Elizabeth Russell ha creado una obra realmente impresionante que promete ser el inicio de una carrera literaria notable.. y bueno, eso es todo.
