Hello, dear Hive Book Club community, I hope you are doing great today... I want to share with you all my thoughts and opinions about the book: The City of Mist, by Carlos Ruiz Zafón. When I heard about his passing in 2020, I must admit I felt a great sadness, he was an author I liked a lot and I admired his ability to intertwine mysteries and emotions, while presenting us, most of the time, with a super gothic atmosphere. When they announced the posthumous publication of this book, I felt he was giving us one last gift to his readers, an echo of his talent that we could enjoy one more time.. this book is a collection of eleven stories that, although some had been previously published, others are completely unpublished, and the best thing is that, although they complement the saga of: The Cemetery of Forgotten Books, you don't need to have read the series to enjoy this great work... it is a perfect gateway for those who want to get to know Zafón's style, without committing to the complete trilogy.
From the first story, I felt transported to this unique universe that only an author like this can build, full of mystery and melancholy, where the streets of Barcelona become almost supernatural scenarios and each of its customers immersed in an atmosphere between the gothic and creepy, his prose is as evocative as ever, you can almost feel the smell of old books... the way the author mixes genres of historical, gothic, suspense, romance, etc., I find it simply masterful, for example, there is a story that explores the life of Cervantes, another that introduces us to a hitman in the post-war period, and even one where a dragon threatens Barcelona in the Middle Ages. They are different stories, but they have that unique touch within their characters and in their narrative.. it seems to me that each story has a unique flavor, and they all carry the unmistakable seal of Zafón... a narrative that envelops you and unique characters that surely many will love and connect with them quickly.
Hola, querida comunidad de Hive Book Club, espero que hoy estén súper bien.. quiero compartir con todos ustedes mis pensamientos y opiniones del libro: The City of Mist, de Carlos Ruiz Zafón. Cuando yo me enteré de su fallecimiento en 2020, debo admitir que sentí una tristeza muy grande, era un autor que me gustaba mucho y admiraba su habilidad para entrelazar misterios y emociones, a la vez que nos presentaba, la mayoría del tiempo, una atmósfera súper gótica. Cuando anunciaron la publicación póstuma de este libro, sentí que nos daba un último regalo a sus lectores, un eco de su talento que podríamos disfrutar una vez más.. este libro es una colección de once relatos que, aunque algunos ya habían sido publicados previamente, otros son completamente inéditos, y lo mejor es que, aunque complementan la saga de: El Cementerio de los Libros Olvidados, no necesitas haber leído la serie para disfrutar de esta gran obra.. es una puerta perfecta para quienes quieren conocer el estilo de Zafón, sin comprometerse con la trilogía completa.
Desde el primer relato, yo me sentí transportado a este universo único que solo un autor como este puede construir, lleno de misterio y melancolía, donde las calles de Barcelona se convierten en escenarios casi sobrenaturales y cada de sus clientes sumerge en un ambiente entre lo gótico y lo espeluznante, su prosa es tan evocadora como siempre, casi puedes sentir el olor a libros antiguos.. la manera en la que el autor mezcla géneros de tipo histórico, gótico, suspenso, romance, etc., me parece simplemente magistral, por ejemplo, hay un relato que explora la vida de Cervantes, otro que nos presenta un sicario en la posguerra, y hasta uno donde un dragón amenaza a Barcelona en la edad media. Son historias diferentes, pero tienen ese toque único dentro de sus personajes y en su narrativa.. me parece que cada historia tiene un sabor único, y todas llevan el sello inconfundible de Zafón.. una narrativa que te envuelve y personajes únicos que seguramente muchos querrán y conectarán rápidamente con ellos.
Meeting again with figures like David Martin or the Sempers was like meeting old friends.. there is even a story that reveals the origins of one of these characters, in a way that left me speechless, however, if you have never read the saga, do not worry, this author manages to make each story work independently.. it is as if each story was a window to a whole world, with a beginning, a development and an end. One of the aspects that impressed me the most was how they managed to create so much impact in so few pages, some stories, like Una señorita de Barcelona, have such strong beginnings that they grab you instantly, imagine reading a sentence like: Laia was 5 years old, the first time her father sold her.. it is impossible not to stay and keep reading, other interesting stories, like Rosa de Fuego, transport you to a medieval Barcelona full of fantasy and a lot of symbolism.. it is interesting in all aspects because each story is a small piece of something big that leaves you thinking for a long time.
Now, I must say that clearly not everything could be perfect, although I really enjoyed most of the stories, there were some that I felt a little less polished or that didn't achieve the same emotional impact as others, for example, Gaudi in Manhattan seemed less involving compared to the rest.. although the central idea was interesting, I felt it lacked the emotional depth characteristic to the other stories.. maybe this is because they were texts written in different moments of his career, and I think that lack of cohesion can be noticed. Also, being honest, the fact that this is a posthumous book generates an extra melancholy in me that could influence how we can value or not this book, it is difficult not to think about what Zafón could have continued creating if he had had much more time....
Volver a encontrarme con figuras como David Martin o los Semper fue como reunirme con viejos amigos.. incluso hay un cuento que nos revela los orígenes de uno de estos personajes, de una manera que me dejó boquiabierto, sin embargo, si ustedes nunca han leído la saga, no se preocupen, este autor logra que cada historia funcione de manera independiente.. es como si cada relato fuera una ventana a un mundo completo, con un principio, un desarrollo y un final. Uno de los aspectos que más me impresionó fue cómo lograron crear tanto impacto en tan pocas páginas, algunos cuentos, como Una señorita de Barcelona, tienen inicios tan contundentes que te atrapan al instante, imaginen leer una frase como: Laia tenía 5 años, la primera vez que su padre la vendió.. es imposible no quedarse y seguir leyendo, otros relatos interesantes, como Rosa de Fuego, te transportan a una Barcelona medieval llena de fantasía y mucho simbolismo.. es interesante en todos los aspectos porque cada historia es un pequeño pedazo de algo grande que te deja pensando por mucho tiempo.
Ahora, debo decir que claramente no todo podría ser perfecto, aunque disfruté mucho la mayoría de los relatos, hubo algunos que sentí un poco menos pulidos o que no lograron el mismo impacto emocional que otros, por ejemplo, Gaudí en Manhattan me pareció menos envolvente en comparación con el resto.. aunque la idea central era interesante, sentí que le faltó la profundidad emocional característica a los otros relatos.. tal vez esto se deba a que eran textos escritos en diferentes momentos de su carrera, y creo que esa falta de cohesión puede notarse. Además, siendo sincero, el hecho de que este sea un libro póstumo me genera una melancolía extra que podría influir en cómo podemos valorar o no este libro, es difícil no pensar en lo que Zafón podría haber seguido creando si hubiera tenido mucho más tiempo..
This is an ideal book for Zafón fans, obviously, but also for all those who are looking for a strong introduction to his work... this book can touch your heart in many ways and is perfect for those who want a taste of this author's interesting style, without committing to a much longer and more extensive novel. These stories were a lovely tribute to an author who surely marked many readers, it is a book that can certainly make you laugh, cry, and most of all, reflect, because that was just what Zafón did... he was fascinated with making you think about many things while exploring very unique characters.
Although I wouldn't consider it perfect, its magic lies in how it captures all the essence that characterizes this writer.. it also reminds us why his loss was so painful, I give it a 4.7/5 star rating, because, although some of the stories could have been more impactful, most of them are gems that I will probably keep in my memory for a long time.. if you haven't read this book yet, I highly recommend it. I think it's one last unique journey worth taking, and well, friends, this would be all the review for today... tell me your opinions, if you knew this author or not... Este es un libro ideal para los fanáticos de Zafón, obviamente, pero también para todos aquellos que buscan una introducción contundente a su obra.. este libro puede tocar tu corazón de muchas maneras y es perfecto para los que quieran una probada del estilo interesante de este autor, sin comprometerse con una novela mucho más extensa y larga. Estas historias fueron un homenaje precioso a un autor que seguramente marcó a muchos lectores, es un libro que sin duda puede hacerte reír, llorar y, sobre todo, reflexionar, porque eso era justo lo que hacía Zafón.. le fascinaba hacerte pensar en muchas cosas mientras explorabas a personajes muy únicos.
Aunque no lo consideraría perfecto, su magia radica en cómo captura toda la esencia que caracteriza a este escritor.. también nos recuerda por qué su pérdida fue tan dolorosa, yo le doy una calificación de 4.7/5 estrellas, porque, aunque algunos de los relatos podrían haber sido más impactantes, la mayoría son joyas que probablemente guarde en mi memoria por mucho tiempo.. si aún no han leído este libro, se los recomiendo mucho. Creo que es un último viaje único que vale la pena emprender, y bueno, amigos, esta sería toda la reseña por hoy.. cuéntenme sus opiniones, si conocían a este autor o no.. nos veremos en las próximas reseñas.
