These days I enjoy reading The Thousand and One Nights, this time in a digital edition and in the ideal place to read it, the countryside. I am already advanced in the third volume, enjoying it with pleasure; each night is a vivifying experience, of amazing stories, the next one even more than the previous one; no wonder King Schahriar could not refuse to listen to the narrating voice of Schahrazada.
A few years ago, when I was reading this work for the second time, a friend of mine, who was also my representative in the school group José María Vargas in the city of Guanare, looked at the book and asked me what it was about and since by then the spoiler was common, I told her the sad story of the brother kings whose wives were unfaithful with their black slaves and how the killing of maidens by one of the brothers began and of Schahrazada's courage to save the rest of the beautiful young women from that terrible king.
In a few minutes I told her the plot and as she began to cry I thought that her crying was due to the deaths of so many innocent young girls who succumbed to the weight of tradition and the laws of Muslim culture, and as I did not want to continue in the middle of that canvas that the environment was painting at that moment for fear that they would think that the crying was due to a bad action on my part, I begged her to tell me the reason for her sorrow and then she told me that her husband was a descendant of Arabs, but she emphasized that he was not like them, that he had learned the western culture; She told me this with much relief and also to defend the real love she felt and feels for her husband and that gesture seemed so beautiful to me because it was of love, sincere, as much as that of Schahrazada herself who offered to put herself in the middle of such a calamity in the hope of coming out victorious.
Today Schahrazada would be a kind of influencer in the fictional world; not only did she save many maidens from certain death, she saved the king by assuring him progeny and a loving life, she restored peace, becoming one of the most fascinating and original characters of the literary world because she won a terrible battle without causing a wound, submitting to the designs of her king, of Allah; she won without making resistance, with the word used in one of the oldest trades of humanity: telling stories.
Schahrazada, the brave one, found in that old craft of storytelling the saving thread for all; she masterfully mastered her artifice, kept the tension and captivated her spectator and with that she triumphed.
Praise to Schahrazada for giving us the Thousand and One Nights.
Loor a Schahrazada por Las mil y una noches
En estos días gozo en la lectura de Las mil y una noches, esta vez en una edición digital y en el lugar idóneo para leerla, el campo. Ya voy adelantado en el tercer tomo, disfrutando a placer; cada noche es una experiencia vivificante, de historias asombrosas, la siguiente aún más que la anterior; con razón el rey Schahriar no pudo negarse a escuchar la voz narradora de Schahrazada.
Hace unos años cuando leía por segunda ocasión esta obra, una amiga que además era mi representante en el grupo escolar José María Vargas de la ciudad de Guanare, me miró el libro y me preguntó de qué trataba y como para entonces era común el espóiler le narré la triste historia de los reyes hermanos a los que sus esposas le fueron infieles con sus esclavos negros y de cómo empezó la matazón de doncellas por parte de uno de los hermanos y de la valentía de Schahrazada por salvar al resto de las hermosas jóvenes de aquel terrible rey.
En pocos minutos le conté la trama y como empezó a llorar pensé que su llanto se debía a las muertes de tantas jóvenes inocentes que sucumbieron ante el peso de la tradición y las leyes de la cultura musulmana, y como no quería seguir en medio de aquel lienzo que el entorno pintaba en ese momento por temor a que pensaran que el llanto se debía a una mala acción de mi parte, le rogué que me dijera el motivo de su pena y entonces me dijo que su esposo era descendiente de árabes, pero me recalcó que no era como ellos, que había aprendido la cultura occidental; me lo dijo con mucho alivio y también para defender el amor real que sentía y siente por su esposo y ese gesto me pareció tan bonito porque fue de amor, sincero, tanto como el de la misma Schahrazada que ofreció meterse en medio de semejante calamidad con la esperanza de salir victoriosa.
Hoy en día Schahrazada sería una especie de influencer en el mundo ficcional; no sólo salvó a muchísimas doncellas de una muerte segura, salvó al rey asegurándole prole y una vida amorosa, restauró la paz, convirtiéndose en uno de los personajes del mundo literario más fascinantes y originales pues ganó una terrible batalla sin causar una herida, sometiéndose a los designios de su rey, de Alah; ganó sin hacer resistencia, con la palabra empleada en uno de los oficios más antiguos de la humanidad: contando historias.
Schahrazada, la valiente, encontró en ese viejo oficio de contar historias el hilo salvador para todos; con maestría dominó su artificio, mantuvo la tensión y cautivó a su espectador y con ello triunfó.
