A Reader's Highs and Lows

in Hive Book Club2 days ago

It’s been a while. Since I wrote anything book related. And when I mean book related, I mean book reviews. I think the fair question to ask is whether I’ve been able to open a book or not — A book that isn’t about the constitution or legal methods, that is. I feel myself beginning to enter a book slump. And I’d been on an impressive reading streak. So, I’m not sure whether to blame it on the fact that I have my examinations coming up in a week from now.

But there was something that happened before this that makes me think that it may not be because of the exams. Remember when I had the streak of downloading and reading purely Nigerian books? Well, one of the books I downloaded was “What is not yours is not yours,” by Helen Oyeyemi. From the name, you can immediately tell that it’s written by a Nigerian. And so, I was looking forward to reading it. I read a series of books which I reviewed. And then I decided that it was finally time to pick this one up.

To say I was surprised when I read the first few sentences would be an understatement. I kept muttering, “Why, this is odd,” every now and then. I clicked again to ensure that I was reading the same book by the same author, and when I confirmed that it was truly the same book, I was confused. What exactly was going on? However, the more I read, the more I sank into the depths of despair. The book is quite interesting. A mystery...of sorts. But there’s something about reading the right book at the right moment and phase of your life, and if you read something other than that, it’s down into the steep, dark hole you go.

I was determined to follow this book to the end, especially since it’s just about 220 pages. But I couldn’t, and with the exam coming up and not enough motivation from my current read, I couldn’t bring myself to read anything anymore. The last few days when I open my book app, I’m immediately blinded by my Faculty’s legal pieces and all the Law PDFs that I’ve got to be completely and utterly conversant with by March 24th. But I was hoping a good book would make me more eager to learn. As it stands now, I get into the app with the intention of finding a good read, end up seeing a Law PDF, and let out a sad sigh as I begin to read the Law PDF instead of what I’d set out to read. The horrors.

This is just my way of announcing my current book state and through this means, inform those who look forward to my book reviews, that I’ll be back, bigger and better from next month, and hopefully, it will be with a book worthy of your interest. I’m yet to read the book I got for my birthday, and I keep waiting for the perfect moment. That perfect moment, sadly, isn’t when school is in session. But, when that is over with, I’ll be ready to gush about it. Till then, my lovely Bibliophiles. Let’s keep our fingers crossed.

P.S: I've not given up on the book by Helen Oyeyemi yet. It is intriguing, so I will read it. Not just now.

Don't worry, life happens.

I, too, have many books that I read halfway through and need to finish. I carried out other things in life.

Focus on what's important for now.

I totally understand you! Sometimes it happens that you just pick up a book that doesn't connect with you at that moment. Don't worry about the reviews, just focus on getting those exams out of the way! You'll come back more eagerly to books for pleasure.
