Ode to Lines of Mystery

If I wanted to write a praise poem for books, how would it be? Would I describe it as the best thing to happen to man? Would I describe it as my redemption? Would I describe it as the thing that breaks my heart yet mends it? The one that heals me? The one that completes? Or would I be at a loss for words? Because sometimes something can be too good. Too magnificent for words to accurately or exhaustively describe. I do not, for the life of me, think that I would have the right words or all the words that would capture the essence of what books are, but I could try to put in my own words just how much books mean to me.

Today, the 23rd of April, 2025, is World Book Day, and it’s funny because I already talked about my adoration for books a few days ago. But can I ever stop talking about books? Today is a day that book lovers and enthusiasts in UK and around the world come to celebrate a phenomenon that is more than just ink on paper. It’s more than just words strewn together. It is life and it is hope. It can build and in the same vein, break down. When I talk about books, some people might think that it is me doing too much.

But that is because they do not know how books have helped me solve the heaviest of challenges. How it answered an unspoken question in my heart. How it gave me direction and spoke to me when I needed a solution that I never envisaged I would find buried within its pages. It’s uncanny how you see the right things at the right time with books. Things that make you go, “Wow. I needed to hear read this.” It’s a pointer to my reality while still remaining a prime source of entertainment.

Or the times I just needed to escape. Escape hard and fast from my reality, and so I sought solace in the confines of its pages. As I read, I felt my spirit come alive. With each character, each scene, each eager flip of the page, I felt my soul immerse in something otherworldly. With a peace I can only find in a reality outside mine. The heartiest laughs? With books. The most sorrowful tears? With books. The most deeply resonating and heart-wrenching thoughts? With books. The warmest smiles and the most wistful sighs? The most royally-potent angers? All with books.

And maybe that’s why I value books so much. When I need an escape from my reality? It’s there. And when I need to plunge deep into wisdom that shapes my reality? It’s also there. It’s so versatile and suits the most frigid of minds while still catering to the warmest of hearts. The most outrageous pieces and the most scintillating lines can be found in its depths. You can find wisdom. You can draw strength. You can seek truth. Or you can just simply be happy. Living and breathing for all the entertainment it provides.

I haven’t seen a friend that stayed as true to me as my books. Through my most joyous moments when I craved it like a thirsty man in a desert, or my lowest times when I eschewed all it stood for and wanted to be anywhere apart from where it stood. It remained true, faithful, loyal, till I returned. There are many words to describe the absolute majesty that is books. But since I do not have all the words, I hope I’ve been able to at least showcase in words too succinct to encompass its worth, just how much I value books. And how steadfastly I will follow it till the end.

Happy World Book Day to all my amazing bibliophiles, and to everyone who’s ever picked up a book and found peace in it, no matter how short-lived. Let’s keep living and loving... with books.
