The Art of Deception || A Typical Nora Thrill

in Hive Book Club12 hours ago (edited)

It’s been a minute since the last time I read a book by Nora Roberts. School has been tedious to say the least, and yesterday, our examination timetable was posted. So, it’s safe to say that reading anything other than academic books is risky business. But I’d been craving works from the lady whose books made me fall in love with the romance genre. Perusing through my e-library, I found a book by, and was glad to see that it was just about a 150 pages which is just about all I can take at this point.

The Art of Deception by Nora Roberts

Philip Fairchild. How can I describe him? A man who is eccentric in his personality as he is with his artworks. Then his daughter, Kirby Fairchild, the lovely Kirby who is devoted to death to her father, and an artist making a way for herself outside the shadow of her doting father. Then, there’s the handsome Adam Haines who is looking for a quiet place to paint and arrives their home on the invitation of Philip, or so it seems.

But there’s a mystery hidden behind all of this. Adam’s timely appearance at Kirby’s ancestral home, Philip’s eccentricity that seems to have gone up a notch since he came, and the loveliness of Kirby that may just ruin the laid out of plans of the mystery villain in this story.

My Thoughts and Rating

You know that statement about viewing things from rose-tinted glasses. Glasses that may be fogged due to our childish perceptions, or perhaps sentiments. But as you grow, you get to see things a lot more clearly than you used to. Probably see them for what they have always been.

Reading this book was a breeze. I immediately smiled at the first few pages because trust Roberts to induce mystery into every book she writes. She’s a romance goddess but it’s never straitlaced. Always with a mystery to solve, a twisted plot to uncover. A villain that lurks beneath the surface. And even if the villain becomes the protagonist himself, you don’t see it coming. I should have seen it coming because I’d like to think I’m better at discovering these things, but how wrong I was! And beautifully so.

I like to like my main leads. Main leads tend to be annoying, and this is not a question of them being realistic. Just plain annoying. But I loved that these main leads weren’t so. From the lovely Kirby to her even lovelier father. The bond between them was sweet as it was different. A strong woman who has lived a lifetime under the doting cover of her father, constantly teasing each other to madness. It was a case of the eccentric with understanding and love as its foundation. A most amazing bond indeed.

I see now what I could not see when I read Nora’s books growing up. How quick and fleeting the kind of love she showcases in her books are. Quick to the point of being unrealistic. People who meet themselves only for a few weeks, but fall helplessly in love with each other to the extent of going miles and making sacrifices. I do not doubt that there is love that can blossom within a few days of meeting, but how intense that love is, is where my doubt comes in. It’s beautiful, that type of love. Wild, passionate, raw and unbridled, sweeping everything in its path in an all-consuming need. But just how realistic is it?

Oh well, I do love to feed my delusions. So, I guess it’s okay to step away from the reality of things a bit. That’s what novels are for, right? Either way, I delighted a great deal in this book. I loved the plot. I loved the characters. I loved the ending and the typical way everything was tied together. Might read another book of hers, because I doubt I’m satisfied yet. Let’s see how it goes. A 4.1/5. Highly recommended for my romance lovers.
