Yo siempre estoy muy emocionada de comentarles mis lecturas (y más si han sido buenas lecturas), pero hoy estoy entusiasmada x10 porque voy a comentarles mis impresiones sobre un libro que leí junto a mis mejores amigos.

Como buena lectora que soy, no tengo amigos lectores con quien comentar, o discutir, o fangirlear mis lecturas, solamente mi madre querida me acompaña a leer de vez en cuando, pero en este momento nos hallamos separadas. Así que me sorprendió muchísimo cuando uno de mis mejores amigos propuso que leyéramos un libro juntos.

I'm always excited to tell you about my reading (especially if it's a good read), but today I'm excited x10 because I'm going to tell you my impressions about a book I read with my best friends.

Like a good read that I am, I don't have reading friends with whom to comment, or discuss, or fangirl my readings, only my dear mother accompanies me to read from time to time, but at the moment we are separated. So I was very surprised when one of my best friends suggested that we read a book together.

Fuimos tres en total los que nos integramos en este pequeño club de lectura. Leíamos todas las noches y les juro que es de las experiencias lectoras más bonitas y divertidas de mi vida. Compartir la lectura, debatir, formular teorías, reírnos y emocionarnos todos juntos, me hizo amar mucho más los libros y su magia.

El libro que escogimos fue Muerte en el Nilo de Agatha Christie, porque nos pareció que sería divertido conspirar juntos para descubrir quién era el culpable (y créanme, lo fue). Además de las reseñas increíbles de las novelas de Agatha Christie, la nueva adaptación de esta historia estaba muy próxima a estrenarse en el cine y por supuesto que queremos estar allí para verla.

En esta reseña les contaré mi opinión de este libro y lo especial que es leer con amigos.

There were three of us total who joined this little book club. We read every night and I swear it is one of the most beautiful and fun reading experiences of my life. Sharing reading, debating, formulating theories, laughing and getting excited all together, made me love books and their magic much more.

The book we chose was Death on the Nile by Agatha Christie, because we thought it would be fun to conspire together to find out who the culprit was (and believe me, it was). In addition to the amazing reviews of Agatha Christie's novels, the new adaptation of this story was very soon to be released in the cinema and of course we wanted to be there to see it.

In this review I will tell you my take on this book and how special it is to read with friends.

Un célebre caso que pone a prueba la extrema lucidez de Hércules Poirot.

Durante unas placenteras vacaciones en Egipto, el detective Hércules Poirot coincide con Linnet y Simon, unos conocidos suyos que están de luna de miel en el país de los faraones.

El encanto de tan maravillosos días se rompe cuando una mañana, en el transcurso de un crucero por el Nilo, la bella Linnet aparece muerta de un disparo en la cabeza.

¿Será capaz Poirot de encontrar al asesino de la joven esposa? ¿Será capaz de discernir entre imaginación y realidad, aun estando a bordo la ex pareja de Simon, empeñada desde el mismo día de la boda en arruinar su matrimonio con la desafortunada Linnet?

El misterio está servido.

A famous case that tests the extreme lucidity of Hercule Poirot.

During a pleasant vacation in Egypt, the detective Hercule Poirot coincides with Linnet and Simon, some acquaintances of his who are on honeymoon in the country of the Pharaohs.

The charm of such wonderful days is broken when one morning, during a cruise on the Nile, the beautiful Linnet is found dead from a gunshot wound to the head.

Will Poirot be able to find the young wife's murderer? Will he be able to discern between imagination and reality, even when Simon's ex-partner is on board, determined from the very day of the wedding to ruin his marriage to the unfortunate Linnet?

The mystery is served.

Narración y Trama / Narration and Plot

Desde el punto de vista de la trama esta historia es fascinante por sí sola. Sea cual sea el caso, todos siempre estamos interesados en saber quién es el asesino. Lo mismo sucede con Muerte en el Nilo, pero la maravillosa Agatha Christie agrega un elemento picante para darle un poco más de sazón a su obra: en esta historia todos los personajes tienen motivos para odiar a nuestra protagonista. Así que formar una idea sólida de quién pudiera ser el asesino no es tan fácil para nosotros.

La manera en cómo se mueve la historia a través de cada situación y por cada personaje se me hizo un poco tediosa al comienzo, sentía que de alguna manera no llegábamos al asunto principal: el asesinato. La autora nos muestra muchos paisajes, situaciones, conversaciones con todos y cada uno de los personajes, los vemos a todos, los oímos hablar y los vemos moverse y pensar. Al principio no entendí por qué le toma tanto tiempo a la acción comenzar, pero cuando finalmente lo hace, cuando comienza la parte interesante, todo cae en su lugar y hasta la conversación más trivial, el gesto más despreocupado, toma sentido y es utilizado para atrapar al criminal.

Confieso que no soy muy fan de este estilo narrativo de Agatha Christie, quizá porque soy de otra época, o estoy acostumbrada a las lecturas que son mucho más modernas en su forma de narrar, pero aun así disfruté este libro muchísimo.

Algo muy característico de esta historia que siempre recordaré es lo difícil que se me hizo como lectora hacerme una idea de quién era el asesino de Linnet. Desde el comienzo tuve una teoría que se me hacía demasiado lógica, mis amigos estaban de acuerdo ella, pero conforme avanzaban los capítulos era cada vez más incierta, hasta que finalmente, cuando aparece el cadáver de Linnet queda descartada por completo.

Mi cerebro estaba en una constante lucha por incriminar a alguien, pero era imposible porque la autora hace un trabajo increíble confundiéndonos a todos con pistas, evidencias y circunstancias improbables.

From a plot standpoint, this story is fascinating on its own. Whatever the case, everyone is always interested in who the murderer is. The same goes for Death on the Nile, but the wonderful Agatha Christie adds a spicy element to spice up her work a bit: in this story, all the characters have reason to hate our protagonist. So forming a solid idea of who the murderer might be is not so easy for us.

The way the story moves through each situation and each character made me a bit tedious at the beginning, I felt that somehow we didn't get to the main issue: the murder. The author shows us many landscapes, situations, conversations with every character, we see them all, hear them talk, and see them move and think. At first, I didn't understand why it takes so long for the action to start, but when it finally does, when the interesting part begins, everything falls into place and even the most trivial conversation, the most carefree gesture, makes sense and is used to catch the criminal.

I confess that I am not a big fan of Agatha Christie's narrative style, maybe because I am from another era, or I am used to readings that are much more modern in their way of narrating, but I still enjoyed this book very much.

Something very characteristic of this story that I will always remember is how difficult it was for me as a reader to get an idea of who Linnet's killer was. From the beginning I had a theory that made too much sense to me, my friends agreed with it, but as the chapters progressed it became more and more uncertain, until finally when Linnet's corpse appears, it is completely ruled out.

My brain was in a constant struggle to incriminate someone, but it was impossible because the author does an amazing job confusing us all with clues, evidence, and improbable circumstances.

Personajes / Characters

Algo que me encantó de este libro es que nadie es lo que parece y los personajes más interesantes fueron aquellos que desvelaron su verdad naturaleza e intenciones.

El detective Hércules Poirot y su genialidad se llevan el protagonismo claro está, pero también personajes como Linnet Ridgeway (la protagonista) a quien al principio yo veía como una simple y pobre víctima, resulta no ser ni tan pobre, ni tan víctima. Y esto sucede con muchos personajes, no te esperas que en realidad sean tan sagaces o malvados y eso hace que sea demasiado interesante conocerlos. Es lo divertido de estas novelas policiacas, por muchas páginas que hayas leído, nunca conoces realmente a los personajes.

Mi personaje favorito fue Jacqueline de Bellefort. La transformación de este personaje me encantó. Amo los personajes que son tan astutos (en especial si son mujeres) y no te enteras en toda la historia porque quieren y necesitan ocultártelo a ti como lector, engañan a todos los demás personajes y te engañan a ti. Me pareció divina la resolución de este personaje.

Something I loved about this book is that no one is what they seem and the most interesting characters were those who revealed their true nature and intentions.

Detective Hercule Poirot and his genius take the lead role, but also characters like Linnet Ridgeway (the protagonist) who at first I saw as a simple and poor victim, turns out to be neither so poor nor such a victim. And this happens with many characters, you don't expect them to be that shrewd or evil and that makes it all too interesting to get to know them. That's the fun thing about these crime novels, no matter how many pages you've read, you never really know the characters.

My favorite character was Jacqueline de Bellefort. I loved the transformation of this character. I love characters that are so cunning (especially if they are female) and you don't find out the whole story because they want and need to hide it from you as the reader, they fool all the other characters and they fool you. I thought the resolution of this character was divine.

Opinión general / Overall opinion

Tenía mucha expectativa con este libro, porque quien haya leído, aunque sea un libro en su vida, ha escuchado el nombre de Agatha Christie. Es una maestra de las novelas policiacas, eso les dije a mis amigos para convencerlos de leer este y creo que la verdad los tres quedamos satisfechos con la resolución final del crimen.

Creo que en conjunto mis amigos y yo disfrutamos del libro, aunque algunas veces no entendimos algunas de las situaciones que se presentaban, al final todo tuvo sentido y pasamos un muy buen rato descifrando cada personaje y haciendo teorías sobre el asesino.

Es la primera vez que leo a Agatha Christie (y la primera vez que leo con mis amigos) y la verdad me gustó mucho. Por supuesto que tengo que volver a leer a esta autora tan genial y a sus crímenes llenos de intriga y espero hacerlo nuevamente en compañía de mis amigos.

I had high expectations for this book, because anyone who has read even one book in their life has heard the name Agatha Christie. She is a master of crime novels, that's what I told my friends to convince them to read this one and I think the truth is that all three of us were satisfied with the final resolution of the crime.

I think that as a whole my friends and I enjoyed the book, although sometimes we didn't understand some of the situations that were presented, in the end everything made sense and we had a very good time deciphering each character and making theories about the murderer.

This is the first time I read Agatha Christie (and the first time I read with my friends) and I really enjoyed it. Of course I have to read again this great author and her intriguing crimes and I hope to do it again in the company of my friends.

Si hay algo más maravilloso que leer es tener con quien compartir esa experiencia tan increíble. De hecho, por muchos días la lectura de este libro nos motivó a llamarnos por teléfono a mis amigos y a mí y eso ha creado un lazo de hermandad que no será fácil de romper. Agradezco profundamente esta experiencia y ya espero poder reseñar nuestra actual lectura conjunta porque, sí, estamos convirtiendo este club de lectura en un hábito.

If there is anything more wonderful than reading, it is having someone to share such an incredible experience with. In fact, for many days reading this book motivated me and my friends to call each other on the phone and that has created a bond of brotherhood that will not be easy to break. I am deeply grateful for this experience and I hope to be able to review our current joint reading because, yes, we are turning this book club into a habit.
