Cool Spring: Remembering Anne Of Green Gables
Snow is still on the ground, but spring sunshine is melting it little by little during the daytime. When the snow melts, the cool air becomes a fresh breeze, and it reaches my nose. The sense of smell of cool spring is such a refreshing thing living in the mountains.
I like to find hints of spring living in the snow country which reminds me of my childhood. It was fun to find spring in nature. I saw some flower buds on the side of the street. When I went to town, I saw more flower buds than near my house.
When I was witnessing nature around me, and observing nature, I often remember the story 'Anne of Green Gables' written by Lucy Maud Montgomery. Actually, I loved watching anime when I was young. The books were also beautiful. My grandfather, when he had a concussion, he needed to do rehabilitation. It was tough, but he tried well. His speech doctor recommended he read 'Anne of Green Gables' because my husband came from Canada.
In Japan, people imagine 'Anne of Green Gables' when they think about Canada, I guess. Of course, Canada is a huge country, so not all of Canada is connected to the story. My grandfather really enjoyed reading the books, and he said that he felt like my husband's home country. The book became the last book that he read in his life.
On the other hand, My husband has never read 'Anne of Green Gables' in his life yet, that's why, I always explain what happened to Anne in her life. Nova Scotian nature truly reminds me of her childhood. Looking at the mountain, the river, the ocean, trees, birds, people, and all kinds of nature, I remember the story.
Even though I really loved the story, I sometimes forget the details. I was wondering about the university name, and where was the actual university where Anne went. Then, I researched about it.
Anne Shirley attended Redmond College in the story. Redmond College is a fictional university in the novel where Anne pursues her higher education and experiences many adventures.
Wow! I didn't remember this part. I remember the atmosphere of her university, but I totally forgot that is fictional. However, I was predicting the model location was in Nova Scotia. Then I kept on researching it. Yes, the fictional Redmond College is located in the town of Kingsport which is not specifically mapped out in detail within the story. I knew it!
When her boyfriend Gilbert Blythe and Anne couldn't meet for a while, I could imagine that Anne was away from Prince Edward Island to attend her university. Living in the east of Canada, I appreciate feeling the story Anne of Green Gables. In Japanese, the tiled is called 'Akage no Anne' which means red hair, Anne.

寒い春：赤毛のアンを思い出す
雪がまだ地面に残っていますが、春の日差しが少しずつ雪をとかしています。雪解けは空気を浄化し、澄んだ風になって香ってきます。山の中に住んでいると、肌寒い春の匂いが気持ちをリフレッシュしてくれます。
雪国に住んでいると、春の兆しを探し出すのが楽しみでもあります。子供の時は自然の中に春を見つけては、よく嬉しい気持ちになっていました。道端で花の蕾を見かけました。町に出た際、さらにたくさんの花の蕾がありました。
近所の自然を観察していると、ルーシー・M・モンゴメリ著の「赤毛のアン」をよく思い出します。昔はアニメバージョンも好きでした。本もとても美しかったです。祖父が脳梗塞になってリハビリが必要になった時、かなり過酷なリハビリを乗り切りました。そんな時、私の主人がカナダ出身だということを聞いたスピーチセラピストさんが、祖父に赤毛のアンの本を導入したリハビリを勧めてくれました。
日本では、カナダと聞くと赤毛のアンを思い出す人が多いのではないでしょうか。もちろん、カナダは大きな国ですのですべてが赤毛のアンのような世界観ではないと思います。祖父は物語をとても喜んで読んでいました。主人の遠い生まれ故郷に近づけたような気がしたそうです。祖父にとって人生最後の本は赤毛のアンとなりました。
一方、主人は赤毛のアンをこれまでに一度も読んだことがないそうです。ですから、私がいつも赤毛のアンの内容を説明しています。ノバスコシアの自然はアンが生まれ育った場所によく似ているのです。山、川、海、木々、鳥、人々など、あらゆる自然が本の中に登場したような気がします。
あんなに好きだった本なのですが、ときどき詳細を忘れています。アンの通った大学の名前と場所が思い出せなかったので、さっそく調べてみることにしました。
物語の中で、アン・シャーリーはレドモンド大学に進学しました。レドモンド大学は空想上の名前らしいです。大学時代のアンにとって、さまざまな経験と学びをもたらした大学です。
そうでした！この部分を忘れていました。大学時代の雰囲気は覚えているのですが、空想上の大学だったとはすっかり忘れていました。空想上とはいえ、私は昔からこの大学はノバスコシア州のどこかにあるのではないかと思っていたのです。改めて調べてみると、やはりキングスポートの町に大学があるという設定だったようです。場所の詳細は明示されていないようですが…。やっぱり！
ボーイフレンドのギルバート・ブライスとアンがしばらくの間会えなかったという記憶があるのですが、大学はプリンスエドワード島から離れた場所にあったからなのではないかなと当時の私は考えていたのです。カナダの東部の様子は、赤毛のアンの物語にたいへん親近感がわきます。
