Selection of Stories by Luis Manuel Urbaneja Achelpohl is a work that compiles the best of his stories and reflects the social, economic and political influence of Venezuela at the beginning of the 19th century. This phrase grants the option of returning the favor, hence the comparison with the mythical Robin Hood, the archetype of the just thief, but molded to the society of that time.
On the other hand, in Difficult times, the author takes us through the desperation of a poor family, victim of the ravages of the local war. The young people of that time lived in fear of being captured to join the ranks of one of the armies or subversive factions. The most striking figure is that of the mother, overwhelmed by pain, but also full of longing to see a free and organized nation.
In The Mixed School I found the figure of the Celestina. The teacher is influential and manipulative, the young people blindly trust her to advise them in matters of love. The thread of morality thins as soon as self-interest and comfort are placed above the welfare of others, even when it is established as an obstacle to the realization of pure and true love.
In Selection of Stories, you'll find a keen insight into the country's political situation, a complex synopsis that stems from historical rigor and is accentuated by human nature and condition. Armed conflicts are not viewed equally by different social strata, as there will always be one side that justifies the use of force to rise to power. For this reason, this work offers a vivid portrait of a Venezuela that seeks to move from barbarism to civilization with minimal trauma, allowing for reflection on several universal themes.

Selección de Cuentos de Luis Manuel Urbaneja Achelpohl** es una obra que recopila lo mejor de sus relatos y allí se refleja la influencia social, económica y política de la Venezuela de inicios del siglo XIX. El contexto y el ambiente presentan la cruda realidad después de la Guerra de Independencia, un país en ruinas en búsqueda de identidad. Este autor es uno de los máximos exponentes del criollismo, por tal razón, en estos textos se distinguen elementos como las costumbres, el lenguaje y los paisajes de un época muy bien delineada.
En estas páginas se pueden encontrar diversos matices que le dan vida y valor a las historias, soldados valientes, supersticiones, jóvenes temerosos obligados a combatir, amores juveniles, delincuencia, estragos de los conflictos ideológicos y politicos; miseria y devastación. Por ello, no solo se presentan imágenes vivaces de los enfrentamientos sino también de una lucha cotidiana por sobrevivir sin importar ideales o tendencias.
Ahora bien, voy a resaltar tres relatos que lograron captar mi atención y poner el foco en un análisis más íntimo. En Ovejón, el autor nos muestra a un ladrón con un código de honor, cuya filosofía reposa en aquella máxima famosa: "Hoy por ti, mañana por mí". Esta frase concede la opción de devolver el favor, de allí que valga la comparación con el mítico Robin Hood, el arquetipo de ladrón justo, pero amoldado a la sociedad de aquel entonces.
Por otro lado, en Tiempos difíciles, el autor nos lleva por la desesperanza de una familia pobre, víctima de los estragos de la guerra local. Los jóvenes de ese época vivían con miedo de ser capturados para que se unieran a las filas de alguno de los ejércitos o fracciones subversivas. La figura más resaltante es la de madre, abrumada por el dolor, pero también llena de ansias por ver una nación libre y organizada.
En La Escuela Mixta hallé la figura de la Celestina. La maestra es influyente y manipuladora, los jóvenes confían ciegamente en ella para que les aconseje en asuntos amorosos. El hilo de la moralidad se adelgaza tan pronto como los intereses y la comodidad propia están por encima del bienestar de los otros, incluso, cuando se establece como obstáculo a la realización del puro y verdadero amor.
En Selección de Cuentos encuentro una mirada aguda a la situación política del país, una compleja sinopsis que se desprende del rigor histórico y que se acentúa con la condición y la naturaleza humana. Y es que los conflictos armados no se aprecian de igual manera desde distintos estratos sociales, porque siempre habrá un bando que justifique el uso de la fuerza para ascender al poder. Por tal motivo, en esta obra se puede percibir un retrato vívido de la Venezuela que busca pasar de la barbarie a la civilización con el menor trauma, lo que permite reflexionar sobre varios temas universales.
