Let's continue with Chapter Two of this book. Yesterday, I had to pause because I was exhausted from my trip. So, let's get back into it!
Welcome back to my morning reading session! It's my new habit to get back into reading after a healthy morning jog.
In the previous part, if you remember, Julie Zhuo talked about four types of managers. Today, let's dive deeper into the first two types and their pros and cons.
The Apprentice
First up is The Apprentice. Here are the pros and cons she mentions:
Pros:
This is usually the easiest way to transition into being a manager.
My Take: This makes sense because you’re already familiar with the team and the work environment. It's like easing into a warm bath instead of jumping into a cold pool.You have a sense of what works and what doesn’t.
My Take: Having this insider knowledge can save a lot of time and help you make informed decisions quickly.You’re able to ramp up quickly because you have context.
My Take: Context is everything in a new role. When you already understand the background, you can hit the ground running.
Cons:
It can feel awkward to establish a new dynamic with former peers.
My Take: This could be tricky. It might take some time to navigate these new relationships and earn respect as a manager.People might treat you differently or share less information with you.
My Take: Being in a leadership position can create a barrier, even if unintentional. It's important to foster open communication and trust.It’s tricky to balance your individual contributor commitments with management.
My Take: Juggling both roles can be challenging. Prioritizing and delegating effectively becomes crucial.
The Pioneer
Next is The Pioneer. You were among the first to take on a challenge that is now turning into a bigger team effort. Here are the pros and cons:
Pros:
You’ve done the job, so you know what it takes.
My Take: This experience is invaluable. Knowing the ins and outs of the job can help you lead with confidence and credibility.You get to build the team that you want.
My Take: This is an exciting opportunity to shape the team’s culture and dynamics according to your vision.
Cons:
You may not have much support.
My Take: This can be daunting. It requires a lot of self-reliance and resilience to push through the challenges.It’s tricky to balance your IC work with management.
My Take: Just like with The Apprentice, balancing hands-on work with managerial duties is tough. Clear boundaries and time management are key.
