This book happened to me: The Murder of Roger Ackroyd written by the incomparable Agatha Christie. The lady of mystery and intrigue.
Eso me sucedió con este libro: El asesinato de Roger Ackroyd escrito por la incomparable Agatha Christie. La Dama del misterio y la intriga.
It was the middle of 1970 and I was on school vacation in the Palma Sola housing development (the birthplace of the Venezuelan Volkswagen) which is located in Morón, Carabobo state. We were still living in Punto Fijo but my dad was working for the now-extinct CVP (Corporación Venezolana del Petróleo) and it was decided that I would spend a few days with him.
Corría mediados de 1970 yo estaba de vacaciones escolares y me encontraba en la urbanización Palma Sola (la cuna del Volkswagen venezolana) que se haya situada en Morón, estado Carabobo. Vivíamos aun en Punto Fijo pero mi papá estaba trabajando para la desaparecida CVP (Corporación Venezolana del Petróleo) y se decidió que yo pasara unos días con él.
Imagine an eleven-year-old girl who didn't know anyone in that urbanization and who had to watch cartoons in English (which had not yet been dubbed into Spanish) by CVTV because it was the only channel that could be seen in those parts. After two days I was super bored and told my dad.
Imagínense a una niña de once años, que no conocía a nadie en esa urbanización y que tenía que ver comiquitas en inglés (que aún no habían sido dobladas al español por CVTV porque era el único canal que se veía en esos lados. A los dos días estaba super aburrida y se lo dije a mi papá.
He found nothing else to give me: a book by Agatha Christie. And yes, it was The Murder of Roger Ackroyd, a paperback edition called Golden Library Selections from Editorial Molino.
Él no encontró otra cosa que darme: un libro de Agatha Christie. Y si, era el Asesinato de Rogelio Ackroyd, una edición de bolsillo llamada Selecciones de Biblioteca de Oro de la Editorial Molino.
What can I tell you about it? From the first moment, Hercule Poirot conquered me with his snobbery and his particular way of putting the people around him to reason, to put the gray cells to work, because that's why they had them. I loved it, it captured me, and I did not stop reading it until I reached the surprising end, like all Agatha Christie novels you do not know who the murderer is until the end and she leaves clues throughout the plot for us to recognize the murderer.
¿Qué puedo decirles a ustedes al respecto? Desde el primer momento Hércules Poirot me conquistó con su esnobismo y su manera particular de poner a razonar a las personas de su entorno, de poner a trabajar las células grises que para eso las tenían. Me encantó, me capturó, y no dejé de leerla hasta que llegué al sorprendente final, como todas las novelas de Agatha Christie no sabes quién es el asesino hasta el final y eso que ella en toda la trama deja las pistas para que reconozcamos al asesino.
That special way of writing her crime novels was what catapulted and turned her into one of the most widely read authors in the world. Her light plots, without arduous complications, without characters that have deep and cruel psychological nuances in their development, but that are named and that is why they act the way they do: sociopaths or psychopaths, but without immersing us in that world as a John Katzenbach or an Ian Rankin could do.
Esa forma tan especial de escribir sus novelas policiacas fueron las que catapultaron y la convirtieron en una de las autoras más leídas del mundo. Sus tramas ligeras, sin complicaciones arduas, sin personajes que tengan matices psicológicos profundos y crueles en su desarrollo, pero que si son nombrados y por eso actúan de la forma como lo hacen: sociópatas o psicópatas, pero sin sumergirnos en ese mundo como podría hacerlo un John Katzenbach o un Ian Rankin.
A world full of poisons, daggers, mysterious trunks, ladies with profuse veils, alibis that confuse us, and then we discover that they are false, things placed in unlikely places, these are the clues that Agatha Christie masterfully left in her writings.

This spectacular lady was born at the end of the 19th century (1890) and died in 1976, one year after having published the last Poirot case: Curtain. A book that I had the pleasure to buy and read as soon as it was published (indeed the Queen of Crime had me spellbound). She had a quiet childhood in an aristocratic environment (that's why her novels are recreated in the world of aristocracy and royalty), she published her first novel in 1920, the First World War was over and she had been a nurse there, that's why she had great knowledge about poisons and dangerous substances.
Esta espectacular dama nació a finales del siglo XIX (1890) y fallece en 1976, un año después de haber publicado el último caso de Poirot: Telón. Libro que tuve el placer de comprar y leer en cuanto fue publicado (en verdad que la Reina del Crimen me tenía hechizada). Ella tuvo una tranquila niñez en un medio aristocrático (por esto sus novelas están recreadas en el mundo de la aristocracia y la realeza), publicó su primera novela en 1920, había finalizado la primera guerra mundial y allí había sido enfermera, por esto su gran conocimiento sobre venenos y sustancias peligrosas.
And for me, that character so special and characteristic filled many moments of delicious thoughts of who could be the murderer. Hercule Poirot was a very pompous and fussy character, a maniac of order, an enemy of circular or rounded shapes, a lover of herbal teas, who at some point in his life wanted to be a farmer and devoted himself to growing zucchini.
Y para mi ese personaje tan especial y característico llenó muchos momentos de deliciosos pensamientos de quien podría ser el asesino. Hércules Poirot fue un personaje muy ampuloso quisquilloso, maniático del orden, enemigo de las formas circulares o redondeadas, amante de las tisanas, que en algún momento de su vida quiso ser granjero y se dedicó a cultivar calabacines.
And it is at that moment that this story begins: King's Abbot is a quiet community somewhere in the English countryside and is where a tragedy occurs Mrs. Ferrars has committed suicide with veronal (a sleeping pill) and the village doctor tells how everything happens, and his sister Caroline wants to be aware of all the gossip around the case you know you "small town big hell". And it is then when the story is twisted because the landowner of the place is killed with a dagger and that is when everyone begins to look at each other to know who was guilty, who had committed such an atrocity, then begin to leave and clarify certain movements, words of double intent and murders of the least thought of people because they had an answer to the murder committed.
Y es en ese momento que comienza esta historia: King´s Abbot es una plácida comunidad existente en algún lugar de la campiña inglesa y es donde ocurre una tragedia Mrs. Ferrars se ha suicidado con veronal (un somnífero) y el médico del pueblo cuenta como transcurre todo, y su hermana Caroline quiere estar al tanto de cuanto chisme hay en torno al caso ya saben ustedes “pueblo chiquito infierno grande”. Y es entonces cuando a historia se tuerce porque el terrateniente del lugar es asesinado con una daga y es cuando comienzan todos a mirarse los unos a los otros para saber quién era el culpable, quien había cometido tal atrocidad, después comienzan a salir y a esclarecerse ciertos movimientos, palabras de doble intención y asesinatos de las personas menos pensadas porque tenían una respuesta al asesinato cometido.
After the Belgian detective unraveled the whole plot, he gathered all those who had to do in one way or another with the murders and named the mistakes made, the false alibis, the things that were not in place when he last saw them (he was a neat freak) and at that moment he unmasked the murderer or murderess.
Luego de que el detective belga desentrañaba toda la trama reunía a todos los que tenían que ver de una u otra forma con los asesinatos e iba nombrando los errores cometidos, las coartadas falsas, las cosas que no estaban en su sitio cuando las vio por última vez (era un maniático del orden) y en ese momento desenmascaraba al asesino o asesina.
But what struck me most about this masterful novel of intrigue (and still strikes me today) is the way it is approached by Poirot. In The Murder of Roger Ackroyd, it happens that way and the most interesting thing was that this novel is narrated in the first person by the Ackroyd family doctor. James Sheppard carefully narrates everything that happens in Kings Abbot, how each of the suspects is discarded one by one by the detective and how Dr. Sheppard boasts of his friendship with the famous detective. And then the surprising statement of the person guilty of the murders, the one we have discarded from the first moment, here Christie addresses how human beings become mean and cruel without ceasing to be sympathetic, where people are just that: people with purely human traits, with weaknesses and successes. And that is why when they begin to narrate the events, everything is filled with smoke and bad comments, distractions that lead us to get confused and look for a needle in a haystack.
Pero lo que más me llamó la atención sobre esta magistral novela de intriga (y aún hoy me sigue llamando atención) es su forma de abordarla por Poirot. En El asesinato de Roger Ackroyd sucede de esa forma y lo más interesante fue que esta novela está narrada en primera persona por el médico de la familia Ackroyd. James Sheppard va narrando cuidadosamente todo lo que acontece en Kings Abbot, como cada uno de los sospechosos son descartados uno a uno por el detective y como el doctor Sheppard se jacta de su amistad con el célebre detective. Y luego la sorprendente declaración de la persona culpable de los asesinatos, la que hemos descartado desde el primer momento, aquí Christie aborda como los seres humanos se vuelven mezquinos y crueles sin dejar de ser simpáticos, donde las personas son eso: personas con rasgos puramente humanos, con debilidades y aciertos. Y es por eso cuando comienzan a narrar los acontecimientos se llena todo de humo y malos comentarios, distracciones que nos llevan a confundirnos y buscar una aguja en un pajar.
After reading this exciting novel I found that my dad had saved others: "The Man in the Brown Suit", "The Mystery of the Seven Spheres" (here I was able to follow the clues and discovered the murderer but not his accomplice), "The Death of Lord Edgware", "After the Funeral", I got hooked on this fabulous novelist, and my dad every time he saw me reading exclaimed: "you're already reading Agatha Christie, again", it was his constant criticism and I would burst out laughing and reply: it's your fault. And don't think that this was only for a while, until he passed away if he saw me reading any book he would come out with the usual phrase: "you are reading Agatha Christie again" and I would answer him laughing my head off (even if it wasn't a book by the author) "it's your fault".
Luego de leer esta apasionante novela encontré que mi papá tenía guardadas otras: “El hombre del traje del color castaño”, “El misterio de las siete esferas” (aquí pude seguir las pistas y descubrí al asesino pero no a su cómplice), “La muerte de lord Edgware”, “Después del funeral”, me enganché a esta fabulosa novelista, y mi papá cada vez que me veía leyendo exclamaba: “ya estás leyendo a Agatha Christie, otra vez”, era su crítica constante y yo me echaba a reír y le respondía: la culpa la tienes tú. Y no se crean que eso fue solo un tiempo, hasta su fallecimiento si me veía leyendo cualquier libro salía con la consabida frase: “ya estás leyendo otra vez a Agatha Christie” y yo le respondía muerta de la risa (así no fuera un libro de la autora) “la culpa es tuya”.
I have lived a life surrounded by books for my enjoyment, also for my studies, they all have a special place in my heart. Because I have to tell you that I don't know how many times I have read it and I always find satisfaction in reading it and one more thing: let's not become cruel critics, let's remember that we now live in a world full of technology that a century ago was unthinkable and that this novel is 94 years old.
He vivido una vida rodeada de libros para mi disfrute, también para mis estudios, todos tienen un lugar especial en mi corazón. Porque he de decirles que no sé cuántas veces la he leído y siempre encuentro satisfacción al leerla y una cosa más: no nos convirtamos en crueles críticos, recordemos que ahora vivimos en un mundo lleno de tecnología que hace un siglo era impensable y que esta novela tiene 94 años escrita.

Hola, Agatha Christie nació en Inglaterra a finales del siglo XIX, mas o menos 1890 o 92 no recuerdo bien.
Decir que Agatha Christie es un mito es redundante. Ya no se trata solo de la novela que la hizo célebre en todo el mundo Los Diez Negritos, sino de toda su obra.
A punto tal que ha logrado amalgamar y unificar ciertos personajes del libro en el cine como por ejemplo la figura de Hércules Poirot asociada al inefable Peter Ustinov.
Algo parecido a la figura del detective Lincoln Rhyme (de Feffery Deaver) en la personificación de Denzel Washington. Es imposible separar uno de otro.
Toda su obra es fantástica en una época que había que hacer los manuscritos muchas veces a mano, corregir y después al final la máquina de escribir.
Merecido homenaje en esta comunidad a la mayor escritora de novelas policiales dirìa en todo el mundo.

I agree! I raced through it in a few hours though still making sure I absorbed every fact and every clue. I had plenty of ideas as to who the murderer might be but in the end none of them were correct. Poirot kept his secrets right to the end and only then did things become clear. It was actually an amazing conclusion to a really excellent story.
