R.F. Kuang is one of the most promising writers at the moment. She has been very successful in both reviews and sales. Yellowface is a self-conclusive book that deals with lying and plagiarism in order to survive in the publishing world. Being Asian, she approaches this situation from her perspective in a very entertaining book, of which I want to share the review with all of you.

Yellowface

Athena and June have been friends since college. Athena is an Asian writer who is as successful as she is beautiful. She has the whole world at her feet. On the other hand, June is the opposite, she has only written one book and it went so badly that no one wanted to hear from her. One night she goes out partying with Athena, and due to an unfortunate accident, Athena dies. Taking advantage of this situation, June has in her possession a manuscript that Athena left before anyone read, so June takes over. She edits it and publishes it as her own.

Are we ready for this, to read the story of a brazen thief? I was, but even so, the main character, June, fell flat for me. I understand what Huang stamped on her when it came to building the character of a plagiarist, it's not easy, because she sure felt like she was in Athena's shoes, like someone was stealing her writing. But I think she hated her, and it made me hate her. It was very frustrating to read her. In the world of literature, there are many stories with gray characters better constructed than this one, that we could sympathize with or understand, or that we could love and hate. But in this case, I found it quite difficult to do so. In fact, it took me quite a while to finish the reading.

It's not a bad story, it's a good book that exploits the culture of Asians and Chinese immigrants in the United States from the perspective of an American. It is focused on race, stigmatization and cultural appropriation, but in a rather superfluous way.

In addition, it delves, according to what I think, in excess, in the culture of the cancellation of social networks. Half the book only tells everything that happened to the protagonist on Twitter (now X). Which would be the second thing I didn't like so much. It could have been less and got that point across.

The writing lacks a bit more maturity, I mean, you could tell that the exits the protagonist takes were a bit excessive and perhaps absurd. With a little maturity, not experience, because this author, 28 years old, has several books published and very successful, but here you can tell she was very immersed in the subject. It is likely that she has done a cathartic writing to explain what happens to Asian authors in the publishing world.

As for the topic of plagiarism, a word that is not unknown to us, it was something I quite liked, especially at one point where they address who the real plagiarist is. Whether it is the person who stole a manuscript, or someone who goes around collecting and portraying stories to make characters in a book.

This book reads fairly quickly, it is 336 pages long. Simple and entertaining writing, do I recommend it? Not very much, actually. But I do plan to read one of her sagas, The Poppy War, which is historical fantasy, which I might enjoy badly and understand this author a bit more.

I have read quite a lot this year, but I had a couple of months with a major reader's block that prevented me from reading more books than I had planned. Even so, I have several over there pending to talk with you. Thanks for reading me, and we'll keep in touch through this channel.
