The Little Prince by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry El principito de Antoine de Saint-Exupéry

in Hive Book Clublast year (edited)

The Little Prince is one of my all-time favorite stories. After being drafted in 1939 and participating in risky aerial missions, Antoine de Saint-Exupéry leaves France following the German occupation and settles in the United States with the aim of convincing Americans to join the World War. Four years later, the French author will be called back to the army, but during that time, in addition to trying to return to combat, Antoine wrote The Little Prince.

I can't think of a better (or more fitting) moment to write such a sensitive and philosophical work as The Little Prince than during a war. I imagine that few contexts impact us internally as much as a conflict the magnitude of World War II. The emotional state of those who experienced it from within seems inaccessible to me, and perhaps that's why I am fascinated by the fact that such beautiful stories as the one Saint-Exupéry tells in The Little Prince can arise from such a horrific situation.

This is the story of children and adults, of the vast world that surrounds us, of the little worlds we sometimes find ourselves in. It is a tribute to life, a critique of the concerns and limitations that affect us so much when we reach adulthood. It is the world seen through the eyes of a child, the one we once were and will always remain within us.

It is a catalog of inspiring phrases, beautiful metaphors, and surreal scenes that tackle various universal themes such as friendship, love, innocence, responsibility, and the relationship between humans and nature. It is a heartwarming and wisdom-filled story, suitable for all ages and never goes out of style. It is a classic that touches the heart.

"One sees clearly only with the heart. What is essential is invisible to the eyes."

This book grew with me and has so many different meanings and interpretations and I saw this in myself; my view of the story changed as I grew up and changed myself. What was always there was the melancholy that is evident throughout the whole book. I guess part of the book's magic is the ambiguity of the ending: everything is possible and open to interpretation.
