Today I would like to share with you my opinion about a wonderful book I read some years ago, one with a holocaust and world war II theme, but which is out of the ordinary in several aspects and that was the reason why I ended up reading it because I have never really liked the crude war theme.
Hoy yo quisiera compartir con ustedes mi opinión acerca de un maravilloso libro que leí hace algunos años, uno con temática del holocausto y la segunda guerra mundial, pero el cual se sale de lo común en varios aspectos y fue esa la razón por la cual terminé leyéndolo porque en realidad nunca me ha gustado la cruda temática de la guerra
I say that the book is out of the ordinary because normally books that talk about the holocaust are usually narrated from the perspective of the Jews and their suffering in concentration and extermination camps, but this book is narrated from the point of view of a German girl and her adoptive family, who are fervently against Nazism and Hitler's excesses, in fact they put themselves at risk to help a young Jew hiding him in the basement of their own house, and all this shows us that not everything is what it seems, while there were people cursing the Germans, many of these actually sheltered Jews and other vulnerable people, let us not forget that the Germans also lived under the rule of Nazism, and that precisely one thing was to be German and quite another was to be Nazi.
Digo que el libro se sale de lo común porque normalmente los libros que hablan del holocausto están usualmente narrados desde la perspectiva de los judíos y su sufrimiento en campos de concentración y exterminio, pero este libro está narrado desde el punto de vista de una niña alemana y su familia adoptiva, quienes están fervientemente en contra del nacismo y los desmanes de Hitler, de hecho se ponen en riesgo por ayudar a un joven judío escondiéndolo en el sótano de su propia casa, y todo esto nos demuestra que no todo es lo que parece, mientras había personas maldiciendo a los alemanes, muchos de estos en realidad refugiaban judíos y demás personas vulnerables, no olvidemos que los alemanes también vivían bajo el dominio del nacismo, y que precisamente una cosa era ser alemán y otra muy distinta era ser Nazi.
Another thing that caught my attention was the narrative, the story is told by death as such, because after all, being a story that takes place during the war, there is no other protagonist than death, but this is not presented as a terrifying and enigmatic being, but as another character, there are even some hilarious phrases in the middle of sad and painful scenes such as the death of Liesel Meminger's parents, since death affirmed that when he went for Rosa Hubermmann's soul he heard her call her “pig” and that was the way she addressed people when she was upset.
Otra cosa que me llamó la atención fue la narrativa, la historia está contada por la muerte como tal, porque al fin y al cabo al ser una historia que se desarrolla durante la guerra, no hay más protagonista que la muerte, pero esta no se presenta como un ser aterrador y enigmático, sino como un personaje más, incluso hay algunas frases hilarantes en medio de escenas tristes y dolorosas como la muerte de los padres de Liesel Meminger, ya que la muerte afirmó que cuando fue por el alma de Rosa Hubermmann la escuchó llamarla "cerda" y es que esa era la forma en la que ella se dirigía a las personas cuando estaba molesta.
And finally what I like most about the book is that it is demonstrated that reading is a great ally at all times but especially in difficult times, apart from death, literature also has much prominence in the story, Liesel “steals” books because after her father patiently made her literate, it was in this way that she could escape from the pain and chaos that surrounded her, maybe sometimes she was hungry, in her house food was scarce, but a book was never missing to feed Liesel's knowledge and also her soul. When she was present at the mass burning of books and was “reprimanded” by her adoptive father to safeguard her from the Nazis who might be suspicious, in the midst of innocence she understood something very important, that reading is a powerful and sometimes undervalued weapon, but the Nazis knew very well the reach that words can have.
Y finalmente lo que más me gusta del libro es que queda demostrado que la lectura es un gran aliado en todo momento pero sobre todo en tiempos difíciles, aparte de la muerte, la literatura tiene también mucho protagonismo dentro de la historia, Liesel "roba" libros porque luego de que su padre la alfabetizara con paciencia, fue de esta manera como ella pudo evadirse del dolor y el caos que la rodeaba, tal vez algunas veces tenía hambre, en su casa escaseaban los alimentos, pero nunca faltaba un libro para alimentar el conocimiento de Liesel y asimismo su alma. Cuando estuvo presente en la quema masiva de libros y fue "reprendida" por su padre adoptivo para salvaguardarla de los nazis que pudieran sospechar, en medio de la inocencia ella entendió algo muy importante, que la lectura es un arma poderosísima y algunas veces infravalorada, pero los nazis conocían muy bien el alcance que pueden llegar a tener la palabras.
