A Booklover’s Top 3 Picks for 2024

in Hive Book Club3 days ago (edited)

This is probably going to be a fast read because, right now, I’m trying to tick this off my to-do list before moving on to the 76 other things I have to do today. So, let’s dive right into it, my top three books for 2024.

These books made me laugh, learn, and maybe shed a tear or two (but we don’t talk about that).

First, a little confession: 2024 was my year of “emotional abstinence.” I decided to avoid anything that screamed love is real. Why? Because even though I believe in love, I was in my hater era. Growing up on romance novels seriously messed up my idea of what love should be; simple, straightforward, a happily-ever-after tied with a bow. Reality, however, said, “lol, no.” So I took a break from all that mushy, lovey-dovey nonsense.

But… even in my rebellion, some love focused books managed to sneak their way into my heart. The kind that showed love with all its messy, thorny, heartbreaking, and fulfilling bits. I couldn’t resist. So, here’s the rundown:

  1. Fourth Wing by Rebecca Yarros

Oh. My. Goodness. Where do I even start? Saying this book is amazing feels like an insult because it’s so much more. From the first chapter, I was hooked. Violet Sorrengail, the main character, is such a relatable queen; frail but fierce. And the dragons? Hilariously sarcastic. I aspire to have Violet’s dragon’s level of sass in my life.

And can we talk about Xaden Riorson? He’s the kind of male lead that makes you forget every other fictional crush you’ve ever had. Dain Aetos, on the other hand, is a certified gaslighting king. I can’t stand him.

The best part? The storyline isn’t just about Violet. It’s so much bigger. Book two (Iron Wing) takes things to a whole new level. If you want a story that screams resilience, self-worth, and the power of inner strength, you need this book in your life.

  1. Call Me Legachi by Adesuwa O’man Nwokedi

This one hit me right in my femininity-loving heart. Legachi is a beautiful, curvy queen trapped in a toxic relationship that drained her physically, mentally, and financially. But when she meets Roman, everything changes. He teaches her to validate herself and that she’s worthy of love just as she is.

Two lessons stood out for me:

(1) Love yourself first. No amount of validation from others can fix insecurities or low self-esteem.
(2) Honesty is key. If your past is still lurking in the shadows of your present, your partner deserves to know. Secrets are a recipe for disaster. Roman almost ruined everything by keeping his past a secret, but thankfully, they fought for their love and came out stronger.

  1. Honey and Spice by Bolu Babalola

Now this one is just fun. It’s an enemies-to-lovers masterpiece that left me in a rhapsody of laughter. The banter? On point. The sarcasm? Chef’s kiss. The tension? Enough to fry an egg.

Imagine realizing the person you despise is suddenly the star of your romantic daydreams. You’re staring at yourself in the mirror like, “Seriously, heart? Betrayal much?”

Lesson learnt? In all honesty, I do not remember. Ha ha. What I do remember is that, love can definitely catch you by surprise. This book is one of my comfort books. It is one I would go to when I need a good laugh.

So, my dear friends, which of these books have you read? What impression did they give you? And if you haven’t read any of them, which would you like to check out? Let's chat in the comments!

Thanks for reading. Xoxo,
Mide.
