I don't know how long this book had been sitting on my nightstand waiting to be read. It happens to me sometimes, there's always something "better" to read and I leave some titles behind in the queue.
This one was lucky, I was cleaning and I opened it to a random page and read a passage that caught my attention. It went from the nightstand to my backpack, and there it stayed for another couple of weeks until I started reading it.
Mantilla? After La Palma by Antonio Arroyo could have a better title. Set in the 2000s, when Cuba was supposed to have come out of the Special Period (economic and social supercrisis that began in the 90s), but everything was just as difficult and rotten. The story has Arturo Amado as its main character, who acts as a connecting point for almost all the secondary characters, who at times may seem like many, but all have their reason for being:
the portrait of an era and a neighborhood, which could be any marginal neighborhood in Cuba.
Perhaps for some who have read more recognized or prolific authors it may seem like more of the same or less rich literary. However, it is a short novel that works to capture us in an accessible and entertaining read while inviting us to reflect on such human themes as sexuality, racism, social classes, economic and social marginalization, lack of freedoms, filial relationships and a long etc. that the reader can (or cannot) discover for themselves.

No sé que tiempo llevaba este libro en la mesita de noche esperando ser leído. A veces me pasa, siempre hay algo "mejor" que leer y voy dejando detrás en la cola algunos títulos.
Este tuvo suerte, estaba limpiando y abrí en una página random y leí un pasaje que me llamó la atención. Pasó de la mesita a la mochila, y ahí estuvo otro par de semanas hasta que comencé a leerlo.
¿Mantilla?Después de la Palma de Antonio Arroyo podría tener un mejor título. Ambientada en los años 2000, esos en los que se suponía que Cuba había salido del Período Especial (supercrisis económica y social iniciada en los 90), pero todo estaba igual de difícil y podrido. La historia tiene como personaje principal a Arturo Amado, quien funge como punto de enlace para casi todos los personajes secundarios que, por momentos pueden parecer muchos, pero todos tienen su razón de ser:
el retrato de una época y un barrio, que podría ser cualquier barrio marginal de Cuba.
Quizás para algunos que han leído a autores más reconocidos o prolijos les pueda parecer más de lo mismo o menos rico literariamente. Sin embargo es una novela corta que funciona para atraparnos en una lectura asequible y entretenida mientras nos invita a reflexionar sobre temas tan humanos como la sexualidad, el racismo, las clases sociales, la marginación económica y social, la falta de libertades, las relaciones filiales y un largo etc. que quien lee puede (o no) descubrir por sí mismo(a).

Hay libros que llegan a nuestras manos con la esperanza de ser leídos, pero la clave está en leerlos cuando realmente estamos preparados o predispuestos positivamente para poder asimilar todo lo que nos regalan. Y ese ha sido tu momento con esta obra que nos acabas de compartir.

Generalmente me pasa, tardo mucho en decidirme/embullarme a leer un libro o ver una película o serie. Aunque lo tenga listo para eso.

Sí, fue entretenido leerlo. A veces dejo los libros y películas ahí en espera un buen tiempo porque no me apetece. Luego llega el momento que no hay más nada que hacer y lo aprovecho.
