Tofu is a very unique food ingredient, isn't it? Do you agree with me? Tofu is a food ingredient that is cheap and easy to process. There are many kinds of tofu in Indonesia, there are sumedang tofu, chinese tofu and many others.
Even though they both know, but if they are processed, they are certainly different, for example, Chinese tofu which has a dense texture, is best used as a mixture for cooking and the famous Sumedang tofu when fried will become hollow, so Sumedang tofu is the best when made fried.
Well, this time I want to introduce Chinese tofu which has the highest density of all types of tofu. For that, I usually make Chinese tofu into meatballs. Yes, meatballs from tofu! Why? Because as a substitute for meat that has high protein, at most it can be used as meatballs for vegans, you know.
I often make meatballs out of tofu, because it tastes good and saves me daily expenses for food. It can be compared with meat which reaches 10$ per kilogram, tofu only requires 0.5$ for one kilogram of tofu. It feels like? Of course it's very different, but that doesn't mean it's bad, right?
Processing tofu into meatballs is not difficult, but it does require good technique. Because tofu has a very soft texture and has a high water content, it takes patience to mix it with flour. So, curious about the tofu meatball recipe this time? So, I want to make Basreng (Fried Meatballs) using tofu, let's check this out!
Basreng Ingredients:
Meatballs tofu:
- 1 piece of tofu (I used Chinese tofu, you can also use any type of tofu)
- 250 gr tapioca flour
- 1 leeks
- 3 cloves of garlic
- Pinch of salt and powdered mushroom broth
- Water to boil
Basreng Seasoning:
- 50 gr dried chili
- 10 cloves of garlic
- 10 pieces of lime leaves
- The oil for frying
- Powdered mushroom broth
How to Cook Basreng:
- Mix tofu with 250 grams of tapioca flour, then add 3 cloves of garlic and powdered mushroom broth and pinch of salt. Puree using a chopper.
- After the chopper, put it in a bowl and give a little leeks that have been sliced thin. Stir until smooth and can be formed. If the dough is too runny, add a little tapioca flour until it forms the perfect consistency.
- Boil water in a wok pan, then add the meatballs that have been formed one by one. Lift the meatballs when it floats to the surface.
- Cut the cooked meatballs into small pieces, then fry them in oil. Fry until golden brown.
- To make the basreng seasoning: thinly slice the lime leaves, remove the orange stalks. Then grind the garlic and dried chilies separately.
- Heat 2 tablespoons of oil on a wok pan, after the oil is hot, add the crushed garlic.
- Fry until slightly brown, then add the lime leaves and dried chilies. Stir until well blended.
- Mix the fried meatballs with the spices, the basreng is ready to be served!
Isn't it easy to make Basreng? Basreng is a snack that comes from West Java. Because this area loves to process a lot of food from tapioca flour. There are so many types of food from tapioca such as basreng, cilok, cireng, cilor. But don't worry, next I will discuss a lot about this food and share the recipe with you guys.

I love your recipe. The truth is that here in Venezuela I haven't seen tofu sold, but I'm sure I can find it somewhere. This will be one of my next life projects haha.
