What are parasites?

They are organisms (macro or micro) that inhabit other living beings (hosts), feeding on them. In the case of food-borne diseases, parasites mainly affect the digestive system, but they can lodge in other areas of the body, such as the brain, eyes, viscera, muscles, etc. They generate many diseases and weaken the health of the host..

What are parasitosis?

It is the presence of parasites in a living being, generating an infestation. Intestinal parasites are very common, which are those that affect the digestive system. They can cause various symptoms, such as gas, diarrhea, indigestion, weakness, nausea, itching in the anal and/or genital area, stomach pain, insomnia, nighttime agitation, teeth grinding, fatigue, swelling of the stomach and/or belly, dehydration, electrolyte imbalance, etc., becoming very annoying and even fatal.

Main routes of infestation by parasites

  • Ingestion of contaminated water or food.

  • Consumption of poorly cooked foods.

  • Use of contaminated utensils or tableware, either because flies have landed on them, or because they have been washed with dirty, contaminated water.

  • Inhalation of eggs or cysts of parasites present in the environment, for example, those that are on a sheet, or those that are on the ground.
  • Contact with contaminated water, where parasites enter the body intradermally.
  • Walking barefoot on soil contaminated by parasites, also entering the body through the dermal route.
  • Contact with contaminated feces.

  • Contact with other contaminated people and animals.
