This traditional Sri Lankan ingredient is not only a staple in our cuisine but also an incredibly healthy and medicinal resource. By incorporating banana flowers into your meals, you can enjoy a vital component of a balanced diet. Beyond its culinary appeal, banana flowers are packed with numerous health benefits. They are a rich source of dietary fiber, iron, potassium, and essential vitamins. These nutrients contribute significantly to improving digestion, combating anemia, and boosting hemoglobin levels. Including banana flowers in your diet can help alleviate constipation, increase iron levels, and support overall well-being. This flavorful and nutritious dish showcases how food can be both delicious and beneficial to your health. Let’s explore how to prepare this delightful and wholesome recipe!
Materials Used.
Banana flower - 1
2 Tablespoon of coconut oil.
1 Cup of coconut milk.
Some water.
1/4 teaspoon of turmeric powder.
1 Teaspoon of chili powder.
1 Teaspoon of curry powder.
Salt - according to taste.
Onion - 1/2 (finely chopped).
Tomato - 1 (finely chopped).
Garlic - 2-3 (finely chopped).
Green chili 2 (finely chopped).
A piece of cinnamon.
Curry leaves.
Pandan leaves.
The cooking process as follows.
Remove the Outer Layers. Start by peeling off the tough, brownish outer layers of the banana flower. Cut into Halves Once you’ve removed the outer layers, cut the banana flower in half lengthwise. Slice Finely Using a knife, finely slice the inner florets as shown in the photos below. Be mindful of the natural stickiness that may occur during this process. Soak in Salted Water Place the sliced banana flower into a bowl of water mixed with salt . This step helps to remove the bitterness and preserve its color. Allow it to soak for about 10 minutes. Squeeze Out Excess Water After soaking, use your hands to squeeze out the water gently but thoroughly.
Now, take a pan and add two tablespoons of coconut oil. Place it on the stove and heat it until the oil is hot. Once heated, add garlic, onions, green chilies, pandan leaves, curry leaves, and cinnamon. Sauté everything together for a short while until fragrant and lightly tempered.
Next, add chili powder, turmeric powder, and curry powder to the pan. Then, add chopped tomatoes and mix everything thoroughly to combine.
Next, add the chopped banana flowers to the pan. Sprinkle in some salt and mix everything well. Let it cook for a short while, stirring occasionally, to allow the flavors to blend.
Next, add the thick coconut milk to the mixture. Let it cook for about 5 to 6 minutes, ensuring all the ingredients are well combined and the flavors are fully infused.
Banana flower stir-fry pairs perfectly with freshly steamed rice, bread, or roti, creating a wholesome and satisfying meal. Packed with health benefits and rich in nutrients, it’s a dish worth adding to your menu. Give this recipe a try and enjoy its unique flavors! That’s all for today—wishing you a wonderful day ahead.
