Collectibles that could sharpen your pencils

I was pleasantly surprised, or rather a little euphoric, to see this collection the other day.

Pencil sharpeners?

Well, that is a collection I wouldn't have expected to see in the feed of our small community of collectors.

More than a year ago, when the idea for this community was born, I assumed that Hivers would want to present all kinds of collections, from the most ordinary to the strangest. To help with ideas and inspiration, monthly themes have been created where we try to combine items that are popular and loved among collectors, such as this month's theme - postage stamps, with those that are here to bring fun, such as last month's theme - socks. However, I have to admit that pencil sharpeners wouldn't have crossed my mind, although I have a few. A really tiny collection, compared to the user who posted her collection the other day. Thank you, @suezoe for sharing your pencil sharpeners; it acted as an invitation for me too, so I will also bring my collection, although so small in number.

There were a few sharpeners that my son had some years ago, but I can't find those. They were more like little plastic toys that had a little container with blades to sharpen the pencils or colours. Who knows, maybe it was me who threw them away. 😅 If yes... then I can regret it now.

In my case, I decided to divide my huge collection into two parts. The sharpeners that actually work well and I use them, and those that are here just as decoration as their blades are already blunt.

1000014811.jpg

Oh, surprise! I have just one sharpener at home from the first type. The others are in the classroom where I give the lessons 😅. This is a Staedtler sharpener, the brand I also use for pencils. The other sharpeners that proved to be good, with sharp blades are Maped. They are quite simple, the most simple design that exists for a pencil sharpener but they do magic for my pencils as I like them with a very sharp tip (I say this for writing, because in art, when graphite is used for drawing, I guess it is not necessary to have well-sharpened pencils. It depends on the technique and the effects you want to achieve).

All the rest, that don't sharpen the pencils perfectly are left to die from boredom.

The second section shows the sharpeners that are not used for their purpose already because of their blunt blades. And also, they are collectables. The brand is Play-me, produced in Valencia (Spain) in the 1970's. I have just three: a gramophone (Play-me, no 925), a lamp (Play-me, no 976) and a stove (Play-me, no 972).

1000014790.jpg

They are of good quality, quite heavy and have many movable parts. Unfortunately, in the early 1980s, the company closed down, but some cheaper versions were still produced in Hong Kong.

I won't deny that I like all three, but I have one favourite. You would think it was the gramophone because of the music. But no, I like this stove the most, it has a little ash drawer and also a door that you can open to put firewood.

Stove in action, but not burning wood and cooking lunch this time. 😁

1000014798.jpg

Apart from the stove, we can see the gramophone that Prince Hefromund uses when he wants to listen to some music.

1000014794.jpg

We can actually move the turntable needle and imagine putting a vinyl record for the little hefrom.

As the third piece in this tiny collection, we see a vintage lamp that illuminates the room for the same prince. I admit that I could have turned on the lamp too in the room while I was taking the photos of these sharpeners because the sun was still half-hidden at that time, and I see the photos are not very bright. Or they are? Maybe my eyesight is not so sharp anymore 😂

1000014802.jpg

This was an enjoyable journey for me, going from pencil sharpeners and their common use to times when these objects were produced, paying attention to such small details. Play-me had a variety of designs, from vehicles, furniture, items used in the home, photo cameras to musical instruments etc. Btw, I do have another one but not here in Spain. It was already an imitation, not an original Play-me... but it is a little piano so I guess I should bring it here next time I visit my parent's home.

And now the question... do you collect pencil sharpeners? 😅

Ohhhhhhh!!! But your pencil sharpeners are beautiful! I really love them! 😭😭😭😭😭😭 I adore the miniature pieces, which makes it a complete delight 😳😳😳 I really love them, they are few pieces but they are so precious and unique, that makes it even more special. I had seen pencil sharpeners of this type only in antique publications and I would be excited to have such a cute piece in my collection, I can even be ambitious. Will there be one in the shape of a sewing machine? That would be so cute 🤗 Thank you for showing us your beautiful collection of pencil sharpeners, it is truly beautiful! 😍 😍 😍 😍 💚

sue_smile corazon.png

I am so glad you liked them, as you are a pro in the pencil sharpeners :))
And thank you once again for your post, just then I realized sharpeners can be a collection too.

A sewing machine? YES, there is a sewing machine, I found it on a page where there are pieces that collectors can buy, I hope you can open the link. It has the number 924.

Oh well, the other time I heard that what makes a collection such is the sentimental value you put into it. Whether it's sharpeners, buttons or even labels, the important thing is that it makes us happy to have it and talk about it 😌

Oh! I just visited the link and I'm in love 😍 Those are really collectible sharpeners. They are beautiful models that deserve to be displayed in a showcase. I hope at some point to have a decent space to show whatever it is I'm collecting (I admit, I tend to keep a lot of things hehe) 😚💚

what makes a collection such is the sentimental value you put into it.

That is true, I can just agree with this statement 😇

I can't believe my eyes, that's an heirloom I say... a marvel!!!! I love how people come up with ideas to create that kind of pencil sharpener. I've seen some weird ones on my painting classmates when I went to class, but I always had the same single one that you have. These look amazing!!! Prince Hefrmund showed up, I missed him already!!!!🤗

A pity they stopped making them, and already so long time ago... Lucky me to have them (inherited them) and lucky Prince Hefromund - he can listen to music and cook and read when it is dark in my piano room 😁

About the normal ones that work well - here are the other sharpeners from my classroom, mine is the red Maped as it is the best, I don't let others use it hahaha

1000014835.jpg

Of all of them my favourite colour!!! There is always a pencil sharpener that works the best hahaha it reminded me of my painting classes hahaha

This is a little piece to keep for the rest of your life, that antique touch makes it even more special, hahaha I'm really surprised with this piece, it's phenomenal.

I am glad these sharpeners are something special and different and make a collection, although small 😉

So cute, the detail level is extraordinary wow really amazing, thanks for sharing señorita mi piano de las colecciones!

Y en realidad, a ver, cambio a English para no decir otras silly words haha, it surely brings moments of fun and laughter, good humour is important in everyday life, in all cultures. 😀
solo pensé en voz alta con mi pregunta porque sé que nunca dominaré el español completamente y con todos estos matices - aún menos posibilidades 😂

So, back to pencil sharpeners, I am glad you liked the details, some are really impressive how small they are and you see when I open that little drawer how tiny its handle is. :)

Yes it is amazing 😂

Yesterday's butterflies and the appearance of Prince Hefromund today surrounded by such beautiful and curious objects filled me with joy. Thank you mipiano. 🦋🎶🌞💃🏻

Prince Hefromund actually lives on that glass shelve surrounded by these objects he uses every day for cooking, reading and music. But the lamp also has another purpose, it likes to play hula hoop with my bracelets from Monday to Saturday.

1000014840.jpg

I am glad these details brought you joy, thank you 🌞

😅 Hay entretenimiento de sobra.

Tenor gif

Wow, I was also surprised to see a collection of pencil sharpeners, I think I have like 4 but I haven't paid that kind of attention to them hahaha.

A beauty these pieces you have! I've never seen anything like this before.

So, you also have a collection, you see :D

Thank you, I am glad you liked them 😇

Esos sacapuntas son pequeñas obras de arte 😍🥰. Tiny, but interesting and beautiful collection.

Hacía mucho no veía al príncipe Hefromund !! Bienvenido sea su majestad!! Thanks Mipiano 🤗.

Gracias @mdrguez, el príncipe Hefromund te manda saludos y abrazos, dice que por fin esta mipiano le ha sacado del olvido, y todo gracias a sacapuntas jaja :D

I never saw that kind of artistic pencil sharpeners, they are so beautiful! My favourite is the ancient cooker. And I loved to see Prince Hefromund again! I missed him. ❤️

I see that everyone missed Prince Hefromund 😋

Humm… I smell a jealous lady from Prince Hefromund. 🤣

I used to have a cannon-shaped one - I think it's still somewhere in the loft. The blade was in the carriage, and the barrel had a spring inside so you could put a matchstick or pellet in and fire it by pulling back the cascabel and letting go.

On some of the vintage ones, the blade can be unscrewed and replaced. I've seen at least one seller on Etsy selling replacement blades with the correct shape.

Hey, that's cool you used to have one, and hopefully, it is still there in the loft. What a cool mechanism that you could even fire the matchstick!

I prefer these kinds of sharpeners just as decoration items. However, it is good that there are pieces and replacement blades that can be bought on sites such as Etsy. 👌

I dont collect them - use them! and throw away when they loose sharpness. But I keep the stainless Staedler one, like yours. 👍 Impressive collection. Does any of them have USB port and built-in mp3 player?

Those that we use but after some time lose sharpness, of course, I don't keep either.

Hahaha, I doubt in the 70's they could imagine the existence of mp3 players 😁

...soon we could not imagine something without usb or wifi port, lol 😄
btw - let me recommend you this book, astonishing reading! it is a documentary half-fiction novel build around invention of mp3, CD-s production and tzunamy of pirate ripped mp3 music in 90-es. I've god loads of fun reading this book, open my eyes on my epoch from a very reliable angle. I recommend the book, not the Amazon seller xD

Thank you for the book recommendation (and not the Amazon seller hahaha) (btw, book collections will also arrive as a monthly theme one day; I just don't know when as I already have a list of possible topics 😅)

This subject I can fill in on a monthly or weekly basis for next 2 decades without becoming bored, haha 😋 my next goal is St.Petersburg Theatrical academical library:

Thank you @ewkaw 🤗

I can't believe these beauties are pencil sharpeners 😲 without reading the title and the post, I thought they were musical boxes, but when I read I was surprised, I die with their size haha 😍 I think these are the cutest pencil sharpeners I've ever seen ❤️ I used to have a lot in my school years, it was amazing to see the ingenuity with which they made them, they even looked more like toys than a school tool hahaha 😂

Seriously, I love these pencil sharpeners 😍

Yeah, they are so cute, they are like furniture for my little Prince Hefromund (have you met him before? I haven't posted about him for a very long time 🥲, and once he appeared with a collection of owl figurines, but somewhere in 2023... I will try to find that post for you when I am back from work, in the evening)

Thank you @elbuhito 😊

Oops, I haven't met him, I guess at that time I didn't know this community 👀 here Buhito will be waiting to meet him hehe 🦉

no worries, it was really a long time ago (bad me for not including this little guy in my posts more often 😜)

@elbuhito, I arrived home now 😅

So, this little clay figurine was born in Krakow, Poland, in a place called The Kingdom.
@ hallmann makes them, they are called hefroms. I got one as a gift when we were there on a cool Hive meetup, and gave it the name Prince Hefromund XVI. I used to bring him into my stories/posts sometimes.

And the post where he was introduced to other figurines in my ex-home is here, I wanted to share it with you because of the owls 😉

hahaha awww, I'm dying, it's divine, you should include it again in your posts, it would give it a unique touch, look at it, it's anxious to come back 😍😍 hahaha

Love those owls, they look sturdy and very polite hahaha ❤️❤️ We want to see Prince Hefromund again 🦉

I can't believe it, how can all this be a pencil sharpener! They look like such cool decorations, if I had these things when I was a kid I would have been the coolest kid in school!

That's true, but I think you were not born at the time these pencil sharpeners were made haha (well, I am on the limit too 😂 )

Funky little pieces, I especially like the teeny tiny stove!

Unfortunately, in the early 1980s, the company closed down

Maybe it's actually fortunate! As the value of these may just keep going up eh..

Fingers crossed then that their value can go up haha
At the moment they are not very expensive, I saw at one site where collectors can buy or sell the lamp I think was 6,90 euros

But anyway, I will keep them 😇

Ok, not as rare as I thought so at those prices, but not to worry you seem to really like them, so happy days either way

Good evening @mipiano, nice collection of pencil sharpeners. Of the Play-me pencil sharpeners (I didn't know that was the brand, nor that they were made in Valencia) I had several as a kid, one of them was a gtramola similar to the one in your collection. The truth is that those pencil sharpeners have taken me back to my first years of EGB.

Best regards and thanks for the trip back in time.

Thank you @enraizar

Do you still have that one? Would be cool if yes :)

You are very welcome; I am glad this post served you for a nice (hopefully nice?) time travel 😉

Here I am again, the trip has very been nice (thanks), the worst part has been the return 😄. I remember it was a clock with the hours in Roman numerals. I will talk to my mother to see if she still has it, but I don't think so.

Thank you very much for the trip, hope you have a nice weekend (I skipped Friday).

Best regards, @mipiano.

hope you have a nice weekend (I skipped Friday).

Oh, but I felt this Friday haha, I am dead 😂

btw, thank you and happy weekend to you too.

There will be a Hive meetup in Madrid as I saw from Nina?

Good evening, @mipiano. That's right, this Sunday we will have a Hive meetup in Madrid, to my shame 😌, organized by Nina. I'm really looking forward to see her again, and also to meet more hiviers (and if it's in front of a beer, even better).

Happy weekend, and have a good rest.

Have a good time 💃 and some beers 🍻😁

💤

Thank you very much!!! I hope you have nice dreams.🌖😊

This is look very ancient. But it is very neat.
Thats great collection btw

Thank you ;)
As they are made somewhere between 1970 and 1980, they indeed are kind of ancient :D

I definitely loved those pencil sharpeners, their shapes are very, very original, plus I love the vintage style.

Their appearance is cool and original, no doubt :)
Thank you.

Good old collection.

Seeing these vintage designs makes me wonder how many unique sharpeners exist out there.

Many, I guess :D

I had a sharpener like the second picture, that was the last I used but I haven't seen it in a year or two.
The others a very impressive and unexpected. If I saw them in a room, I would never think they were sharpeners. Your collection is cute

Thank you :)
