Traveling to Hong Kong
In 1997 my father was hired by Colgate-Palmolive to install plastic injection molding machines and train the personnel that would be in charge of the production, it was the first time that my father visited the Asian continent and he was very excited to know China, my Colombian father never thought that because of his knowledge and work he would be able to know this continent.
At that time I was about 18 years old, and I was very happy for the professional achievements that my dad was having, he was about 2 months over there and in his free time he was dedicated to photograph and sign everything he saw, on his return he brought with him some objects for the family and also bought some things for himself. I remember he brought back many newspapers and a Mandarin dictionary, but what he appreciated the most was this collection of coins that he had bought as a valuable souvenir of those days.
Colección de monedas chinas de 24 k de oro
Viajando a Hong Kong
24 k gold coins
These coins came in a black plastic case, it did not look like a luxury case, but my dad believed that inside it was a valuable relic, when opening the case you could see all the coins that I show you in the pictures really beautiful with a splendid shine, they have been kept almost intact because each one of them is protected by a transparent plastic case, to take the pictures I took them out of this case.
I like them because they are in relief and tell a story. You can see in some of them: people working on the land or mines, they seem to be workers of some mine, others have images of the orchid flower, I think it is the national flower of Hong Kong as well as the one of Venezuela.
In others you can see the image of a leader that I did not know exactly who he is and the results of my research on that were vague, maybe I did not know how to search well. I also could not decipher the inscriptions in letters surely someone who speaks the Mandarin language or who knows the history of this country will know its meaning, in another one you can see the buildings and the city and there is another coin which shows the map of the continent, all are really beautiful and I would like to believe that they are worth as much as my dad thinks.
My doubt lies in the weight of each of these coins are so light that make me doubt their value also if you drop it has a sound quite unique similar to aluminum or silver sounds hollow so it makes me think they are a symbolic representation of the history of Hong Kong souvenirs to remind tourists who were in that land, but has no value equivalent to what it claims to have that are 24 k gold.
I am sure that my dad paid a disproportionate value for these coins because he came with so much illusion almost like a child when he receives a gift from Santa Claus, for him they are genuine gold coins. More than twenty-five years have passed and they keep these coins in the matrimonial room, without their protective case because it was damaged.
If these coins have any economic value, I would like to know what it is. If you know this information or what these coins represent,I invite you to share it in the comments. Tell me, did you like them?

These appear to be medallions/medals rather than coins since I cannot see any of the number characters or distinct denomination like Yuan, or Remembi on them. It does appear to commemorate the return of Hong Kong to the People's Republic of China in 1997. These may likely be categorized as exonumia. My guess is these are souvenir medals.
Since I have some Chinese ancestry in my genes I do have some Chinese gold and silver in my Asian Stack collection. Most are of pre Communist China Republic of China, Qing Dynasty and several cultural themed coinage. People's Republic of China gold and silver I am not familiar with, only the Panda series.
I wish I learned the written language, as I could manage a little spoken Cantonese. I have some posts on ROC 2 Jiao, ROC 1919 20 cents, Chinese New year silver and Traditional Chinese silver bullion.
Thanks for sharing @soyunasantacruz
Medallions.! 🤔😲 I wouldn't have thought so, maybe.
I also have several coins that my dad brought, in the next posts I will show them.
Thanks for complementing my post, your.comment is very valuable thank you. @kerrislravenhill
I will review your posts carefully.
Unfortunately, I don't speak Mandarin either so I can't decipher what is written on the coins but the fact your parents still keep them in the matrimonial room tells me that they also have this extra emotional value as they are brought from far away, they are part of his memories too!
That's right, I joke and tell them that's my inheritance, one coin for each brother.
I am sure they have value... unfortunately, I do not know.
Perhaps you can search the manufacturer of the medals (or coins?)
It's great that you have a souvenir from Dad's work in China, @soyunasantacruz !

Hello @silversaver888, I would not know how to search for the manufacturer but thank you for suggesting a solution.
They must have some value, the sentimental one already has it.
To know if they are genuine gold, a trustworthy professional could tell, but trustworthy because the world is full of opportunists haha even so, whatever their value, you have to admit that they are very beautiful ❤️
Oh yeah, right I have to look for that person who doesn't want my coins. Thanks @elbuhito 🥰
Those are very cool! I know very little about Asian items since I don't speak the language. I stick with English and Spanish, the two I speak!

Well, congratulations. I only speak Spanish and I help myself with English using a translator. 🤣

Just came across this post. These are interesting coins that your dad has collected.
1997 was a significant year for Hong Kong, it was returned by UK back to China, you can see that from some of the coins. I was working in Hong Kong during that period, but wasn't aware or rather not interested in collecting coins. I don't know how many sets of these were issued back then and how much they're worth now. One set was listed on ebay for USD85

btw, after reading @kerrislravenhill comment I now know these aren't coins 😀
Hi friend, never too late to receive your visit 😁 @livinguktaiwan
Jejejej si imaginate que pena, realizing that I posted coins and they were medallions, now it makes sense the black chain that came in the package and discarded.
I think I'm the only one posting necklaces or medallions thinking they are coins 🤪🤣.
Interesting to know that you and my dad were in the same place on those dates.
I do have many coins from China and Hong Kong, but I haven't published them yet, when I do I will tag you so you can see them and give me your approval.
I send you a hug.🤗
