Through a connection on my Facebook page, I came to know about this festival. It is called Diwali - Festival of Light. At first, I didn't pay too much attention, however, when I looked at the agenda for the day, it looks really interesting with cultural performances, food and some fun activities on site. This festival happened during October but I didn't know which community to post so I have been hesitating until I found Cross Culture today. Reading through the rules, I think it is perfect for my post so here it is my first post on Cross Culture community.
I love all the traditional costume and jewelry they are wearing. Normally, I only see them in movies so it is great to touch and feel them in real life. I didn't buy any as I know I won't use them and it will end up piling in my wardrobe.
There are many food stalls. Unfortunately, a friend of my partner from India was not able to join us at that time so I didn't know what to eat. Also, I was not so hungry so we decided to get some sweets to have while enjoying the opening ceremony.
Great performances from the community. I could see how much efforts they had put in to make it great like this. For a person who had no idea about Diwali, I had a great time and really enjoy the dance performances.
Outside, I could see some tables were set up for making lantern. This is designed for children so I was too shy to ask to make one.
This is the first year they had a chance to celebrate this festival in a big hall at the Michael Fowler Centre. I really appreciate the effort of both Indian community and Wellington council for their support to hold a big event like this. It makes our little capital city special as we are all migrants here so it's a great opportunity to learn about each others' culture.

I've always wanted to participate in this type of celebration like Holi or diwali. Great to see you did that! If I were you, I'd just sit there and make laterns😄
I know I should have done that. Now I am regretting. As I know now what to expect for this type of event, next year I will make sure to have my day organised so I can enjoy the event for longer.
