RE: Am I the only one who thought 2020 was kind of nice?

Hey, @whatamidoing.

I guess I should probably start off this comment by saying I agree with you that plenty of good has, could and should come out of 2020.

After all, I only got sick once this year. (And it wasn't COVID-19).

I didn't see or hear as many sick people out and about as I have in years past.

If I didn't have to wear a mask the whole time, the cross country flight I took from South Carolina to Oregon would have been the best commercial flying experience I've had since 9/11. Actually, it probably still is.

I feel like I have grown in some ways., spiritually being one of them. As a member of a church, and being largely cut off from weekly in-person meetings, there has been the opportunity for a strengthening just as much as a weakening.

A lot of things, however, were pretty much the same for me, too, as they are any other year, which I will chalk up in the positive category, since they constitute normalcy for me and not an upheaval of routine or life in general.

That said, economically, there has been a hit, but yes, there are silver linings. We're still in our house, still paying our bills and on our debt, and if the federal government continues to throw money at us, we'll have more with which to pay down that debt.

A lot of the positives you talk about that people have moved to I think I've been there for some time, but it would be nice if there were more and more of us heading that direction. I'm concerned that such is not the case, or that in reality, people will be upset that the government didn't or wouldn't do more, rather than simply provide guidance rather than mandate restrictions, then find themselves in a position where sending out billions upon billions of dollars in "stimulus money" is actually looked upon favorably to some degree.

I guess the one technical nitpicking I will do with "What's done is done." There are certainly situations that don't merit ongoing arguments or fights, but I don't know that I can put the shuttering of local businesses into that category. :) I think the rippling effect of those closures has not yet been fully felt, and that it will probably lead to a domino effect where others go down, too.

And in the greater sense of the phrase, I'm not sure anything is done yet. It may well be getting started, and we may very well find ourselves with a 2021 and beyond that make 2020 look like the best year ever. Or at least allow more of us to look back more fondly on it than we did going through it.

Sort:

Faith in life (wherever it comes from) can make us strong and allows us to find the best possible outcome even in really shitty situations like this. If 2021 is worse than 2020 I think it will also serve to help us grow and evolve. I believe the seeds of better ways of living are already being sown, and we are a part of it right here. :-D

I sincerely hope that's true. It's certainly a big reason why I stayed on STEEM and now HIVE. We need something that changes the world for the better. I'm hoping that cryptocurrency or even blockchain technology is a significant part of that.

Historically, though, for enough people to be willing to give up what is necessary to actually make things better requires a lot more pain than what I think we've experienced communally so far.

There is no doubt, though, that a great good can come from bad. It happens all the time. It's sad that it takes having the bad happen for so many of us to be willing participants in something good.

The more I focus on the suffering or potential suffering, the less focused I become so my number one struggle is just focusing on doing what I can do right now....not always easy but I try!
