Greetings everyone,

The holy month of Ramadan is here again and is back with all its blessings that comes along with it. Muslims all over the world observe this Islamic pillar upon the sighting of the crescent during the month of Ramadan (the 9th month of the Islamic calendar).

As it falls on a specific month, Ramadan is observed on a yearly basis. However, the Islamic calendar is quite different from the Gregorian calendar which is utilized in most parts of the world. This can be clearly seen from the calendar below since we happen to be in the 3rd month which is vastly different from the 9th month as spelt out on the Islamic calendar. Also, the year on the Islamic Calender is 1444 instead of 2023.

The Purpose of Ramadan.

The purpose of Ramadan is to encourage goodness amongst Muslims all around the world. This is why Allah Almighty emphatically states in the Holy Qur'an the essence of observing Saum (fasting).

Allah Almighty states that "O ye who believe, fasting has been prescribed for you, as it was prescribed to those before you, so that you may become righteous." (Al-Baqarah verse 183)

From the outside, it seems Ramadan simply has to do with fasting and abstaining from food. However, it is much bigger than that. During the month of Ramadan, Muslims believe that Allah closes the gates of hell and opens the gates of heaven. Thus, any act of kindness is a great deal.

Acts such as alms giving, kindness, offertory, prayers, being modest, lowering your gaze, respect, and so on are acts that are revered in the Muslim society especially in this month of Ramadan.

Also, as we get towards the last 10 days of fasting, we are graced with Laylat-Al-Qadr. During this period, the Allah sends His angels to the doors of every Muslim. Thus, we intensify our prayers in hopes that we may be among those fortunate enough to receive the entire blessings of the Holy month of Ramadan.

Thank you for your attention. Ramadan Kareem!!

What I love about Ramadan is that the rewards are increased and the sins are more severe which makes you want to do good to earn the rewards and avoid sins more than in normal months. I'm glad I'm in a majority Muslim country where people protect their modesty. Lowering our gazes is important every day, but it's much more important during Ramadan.

By the way, I'm curating Ramadan posts on Hive this year, and I can't believe I missed this one.
