Dutch Carnival seems to be changing?

in Cross Culture10 hours ago

This week when you are in the Southern part of the Netherlands you might get some form of cultural shock on seeing all kinds of people dressed up, hearing marching band music playing and seeing just utterly drunk people dressed in teddybear suits and clown suits tipping over and vomiting in the train while wildly harassing people who aren't into the game.

Welcome to carnival in the Netherlands!

The 'prince' of the town and their allies

Always 6 weeks prior to Easter before lent (fasting) starts that is the period of time when carnival is here. That is also the reason why in Germany and Switzerland this party is called 'Fasnacht' because it is the start before the period of time before fasting.

For some reason (and I guess this has mostly to do with catholocism being here most in the South of the country) this is only celebrated 'below the rivers' and all of these traditions seem to have deep roots that are different in every little village.

This is more of the masks and tradition seen more in the German and Swiss towns

It is also so that every town has their 'carnival name' which is different to their normal city name. The city of Eindhoven is called 'Lampengat' because of its original with the Philips lightbulb factories. The city of Tilburg is called 'Kruikenzeikers' because of that the city is known for making wool and originally using urine in the processing of it. Weird history that comes back over there right?

What I have been noticing

I remember back when I was a kid I was one of the only ones not celebrating carnival. I don't like the the whole theme of dressing up and I also don't like the whole idea of people getting excrutiangly drunk while thinking they can pull anything off just because they are wearing a mask and a suit and are anonymous because of this and that means it is okay....

But when I was asking around this week at work on the youngsters what were their plans for carnival, I had expected some kind of answer on that they would be heading off for 4 days straight, preparing their hangover survival packages and looking into the last details of their outfits.

The reality was ....crickets...

It feels like this is shifting a bit and carnival might turn into something more traditional in the towns, because how it is done in the cities...That seems to be different.

On the other hand, nearly every big city released warnings in the previous days not the enter the city anymore because the cities are 'full' to have some better crowd management. So I guess people are sitll heading into the cities after all.

I read some quote ealier in the week somewhere 'carnival is great for the economy but terrible for people calling in sick the days after, but still it benefits society'

Well....I guess I will return to working a bit extra so others can enjoy this a bit more. It just aint for me.

Someone still has to come to work to take over other works after they have a big drink during the carnival. some things is also changing here in my culture, some of them are now muh more related to be getting drunk after the carnival or during the carnival, the core meaning of the said carnival is now getting lost between the euphoria of the crowd, the vibes, social media feed than the true meaning of it.
