RE: Making Peace from the Bottom up

in Cross Culture7 months ago

We've grown accustomed to looking at the world in a way that has the potential to create a variety of problems. These are deeply ingrained biases, some of which may have had their purposes back when the world was less connected and less abundant.

Trying to have a more neutral mindset is such a difficult thing, but when you start to somewhat achieve it, it really reveals how odd the world around us is. How often the world thinks in black and white, rather than trying to consider each thing as its own problem with sometimes no real solution. It can even be a stressful process to have that more logical approach to things when logic cannot be applied to scenarios. But I think it's good to be aware of how fragile and silly things can be; if you can't fix things, at least in some instances you can use your awareness of the world's silliness to make someone's day or life a bit better by just being a bit different to what they're used to.

Right? I don’t blame people for getting triggered from time to time. But I don’t think it’s healthy to treat that state as normal or inevitable or out of ones own power. Even if you are the victim, it doesn’t mean you don’t have agency over your own actions. It may be more difficult and it’s probably not fair but how you react is still up to you. I’m a fan of anyone who is trying to become more triggerless, regardless of where they stand in politics.

There is also the conformity which everyone sees in everyone else but so few see in themselves.

I was in the punk scene long enough to realize that the desire to conform was as strong as a desire to rebel. This is why I never wore converse shoes or spiked my hair or got piercings.

But even though I know I’m less prone to being sucked into groupthink, I still catch myself being swayed by others, because no one is immune. Being influenced by others is fine too, as long as we are aware of it.

I think the solution to both these is to spend more attention on ourselves instead of looking outward for problems that we have little to no influence over
