A Reluctant Life Coach

I feel qualified to “coach” and would like to, but something about packaging myself feels so off to me. I’ve tried it before but every time I write up a description or an introduction, I vomit in my mouth and die a little on the inside 😆

The fact is, the only people I have ever trusted enough to pay money for guidance are people who did not try to sell anything to me.

I know many people are not like me, they want to see qualifications and hear testimonials and see that that person already has exactly the life that they want.

If you listen to your gut though, you can know if someone has something to offer you just by what they put out into the world. It doesn’t have to be shiny or perfect. It just has to have that something you feel you are missing.

I know the common wisdom is that you need to make a brand and build that brand but I believe a brand is a compensation for a lack of authenticity.

This is not a criticism. Authenticity at a high level is way way harder than we make it out to be. Authenticity requires us to dig into our experiences and our desires and fears and passions and frustrations and really get a sense of what drives our every move. It’s not “Just doing whatever you want”.

So I believe that if you are authentic at a very very high level, you don’t need to think about marketing, and I believe this enough to bet my entire life on it.

That doesn’t mean people can’t call you a brand and analyze you the way they might advertise someone with a business plan. There are strategic decisions that people can make authentically without having the mindset of building a brand. It may look the same, but the driving force is creativity.

For example I always look for effective titles, not simply because I want you to read, although, I do want you to read. My primary concern is that the title fits the work and has the impact that I desire it to have. I’m not going to sacrifice a good title in order to get views, and luckily I don’t have to, cause good titles catch people.

Good titles catch people but not all titles that catch people are good titles.

Marketing and branding, is just the optimization of image management, because art is unpredictable. I am not saying it’s a bad thing and if you have many mouths to feed, it may be a necessary thing. Business owners probably should market and think about branding.

As an individual artist, a teacher or a coach, I don’t believe that I need to think in terms of marketing. I just need to give as much as I can possibly give of the things I feel I came here to give, to constantly improve, both my aesthetic sense and substance, and I need to give people an opportunity to pay me.

This is all easier said than done, but personally, I have been walking the walk for years and I am finally at a place where I am not disturbed by setbacks.

I cannot decide what life gives me
But I can decide what I give life
And so I give it as much and as hard as I can.

Now that I feel study and stable in this state of mind and I am putting in the work and making the improvements, I feel comfortable saying that I would like to coach people, without going out and promoting myself.

If people see what I am doing and what I have shared they come to me for guidance, I know it was meant to be. So this is an invitation to all those who know me

I can help with things like:

  • getting over shyness or negative thoughts

  • emotional stability

  • living a more exciting life

  • Finding a path towards your passion

  • Navigating a foreign culture

I’ll give a huge discount to the first few people to join me from Substack. If anyone bites I guess it was meant to be. If not I will try again when my audience is bigger and when I have showed even more of what I have to offer.

100% man

I've heard countless times different versions of "great products sell themselves", and I think this is one other way to put it. So when I go on Linkedin and the likes and I see people (especially friends) who I know definitely aren't the people they're selling on their profile, it all just looks a certain way. Like dude, I know you, you've never said "elated" in your whole life, and you sure as shit are not passionate about this thing, but yeah it's whatever.

I would definitely pay for you to coach me, because I've seen how you think and notice how your experiences make you a fit to coach people. You're doing great, man. Keep at it and keep being awesome!

That’s true, “Great products sell themselves”, I guess that is exactly the high-level authenticity I am talking about!

Thank you so much!!! 🤯
Let me know if you ever want to try, I can give you a double or triple discount! 🔥

I think I'm the same as you are in this case. I'm not all that bothered about the idea of titles and credentials. I think people without them are more often better choices because there's a clear passion when something is done without getting all the qualifications and accolades. I definitely don't like the idea of judging a person's abilities purely based on where they studied, or which companies they've worked with.

You can also get a good look at how a person can be based on their personality alone. The colours shine through if they're a good fit just naturally.

I remember being taken to a psychologist as a high schooler and being able to diagnose the doctor. I thought it was so absurd that someone so unfixed was trying to fix other people.

Ironically I tried to fix people for a long time while I was unfixed.

But yeah, when someone has done the work and gets to a certain level, you can kinda just tell that they know what they are taking about, and it’s surprisingly rare, although I see it with some really amazing artists
