Recently I sat down with @drrune for my new podcast Untangled Knots and talked about a lot of topics, from Urban shamanism, to the slums in Venezuela to the deeper themes that are hiding in television and movies. It went even better than expected.
There were a lot of things that stood out about our conversation, but one of the more light hearted topics were the bright and colorful Macaw parrots that have become a part of daily life in Caracas.
To summarize what he says (though I recommend watching it in full), the beautiful Macaws were not indigenous to the region but when they were brought there, the locals fell in love with them and started feeding them and building relationships with them. They are creating a new kind of relationship between humans and animals.

I think this podcast opens up a lot of room for discussion and I want to know how everyone feels about the things we talk about. I know not everyone had time to watch or listen to the podcasts in full (although I hope more and more people do) but I want to use them as an opportunity (and a push for myself) to ask relevant questions about your individual experiences and thoughts as well as the cultural situation relating to these specific topics.
So I’ve brought back this series of prompts to encourage discussion and deeper understanding among our friends from different countries.
Here are the questions I’ve come up with about animals:
Do you like animals? Why or why not?
Do you have or have you ever had a pet?
Are animals respected or looked down upon in your culture?
What wild animals can be found where you live (or in your hometown)?
Are any animals considered good luck or bad luck in your culture?
Do any animals have a specific meaning in your culture?
What animal do you feel most attracted or connected to?
What’s the most beautiful relationship you’ve seen between a human and an animal?
What was your best experience with an animal?
These are loose prompts, there are no rules. I will make a list of questions and you can answer all of them in a few sentences OR choose one and write a whole post about it. There are no defined prizes but I’ll be upvoting well written posts from my two accounts as well as the @crossculture. If someone writes something really wonderful. If someone writes something that I really like, I might even delegate 1000 HP.

Beautiful parrot, I'm sure too many societies would be happy to feed and keep them if they came around.
For the questions
• I like animals, because I find them interesting and most of them are a pleasure to look at, they give the environment a more naturally relaxing feel.
• I don't have a pet, I've never had a personal pet but at mum and dad's we've had two dogs.
• In Nigeria, my country, animals are not respected much. Pets are loved and fed and taken to the vets and all, but people mostly view animals for what value they bring to the table like dogs bring security, cats chase rats, other livestock bring meat, eggs, milk, you see? Most people here don't care about animals past the value they bring.
• Where I live (Abakaliki, Nigeria) there are a lot of toads and dangerous snakes, but these snakes never bother anyone except you go meet them in the bushes.
• Black cats and owls are considered bad luck over here. For goodluck, I can't think of any in my culture, I probably don't know since a lot of superstitious beliefs are dying.
• Lions mean strength and rulership, elephants mean size, tortoise mean cleverness, scorpions mean danger.
• The animals I feel most attracted and connected to are dogs. I love those mfs
• A man-animal relationship that has impressed me is that between cattle and the herdsmen from Northern Nigeria, the way these guys just give a command with their mouths and their large herds obey is just so impressive. Cows could surround a road and be scattered here and there but when a car is coming, the herdsman just makes a sound with his tongue and all the cows leave the road immediately! You gotta feel that.
• My best experience was with the first dog my parents bought, they didn't buy it when I was really younger, I was already about 17 when they bought it and one day I returned from the university after being away for months and the dog was just too happy to see me. For hours the dog danced around and welcomed me, I was so moved, no one had ever shown that much happiness to see me. Also it was the first time I experienced something like that because we haven't had a dog before, I didn't even know dogs could get that excited.
I wonder if my fear of snakes in the wild is irrational. I am not scared of domesticated snakes but if I saw one in the wild (even a small one) I'd be really scared.
I heard the herdsmen can make some trouble but their existence is fascinating to me.
A very unique thing in the world, and a unique relationship with animals for sure.
This is awesome. I learned a lot from dogs about how to treat people. Obviously I can’t randomly sniff their butts but I want to be playful and enjoy everyone I meet which is how dogs eat when they don’t perceive any threat.
You're right to be scared of snakes in the wild, that's where they like to attack. Many snakes come to hide in people's houses, then these people find them and kill them, I keep telling these people that these snakes didn't mean any harm, I don't know why they're hiding in your house but I know they didn't mean any harm. Snakes have never bitten any one in their homes over here but too many snakes have been found and killed in people's homes. I keep saying if these snakes meant any harm they would have done it before you found them to kill them. It's in the wild you have to be concerned about snakes.
Yeah, those herdsmen are mostly terrorists, but it's just admirable how they communicate with those cows, ai couldn't believe my eyes when I saw it.

Interesting! I've seen you mention cross-culture on Twitter in the past, but never acted upon it. While reading this one about animals, I may try to write my first answer one of these days :) Because I think it's a very interesting concept to have questions like this and find out how other cultures think about the same topics, I decided to share your post on Listnerds.
