RE: The Difference Between Older and Younger Generation In Nigeria

in Cross Culture4 years ago (edited)

Thanks for sharing. I chose this topic specifically after some conversation with @belemo and @starstrings01 about the generation gap in Nigeria. I wanted to know some other perspectives and also hear about other countries too.

I spent 5 years in panda land, so I have a lot of friends whose parents expect them to listen to everything they say. My American parents on the other hand...they TRIED to give me freedom but they were every judgemental of my decisions which put a lot of psychological pressure on me. They also loved to say “I told you so” and acted so offended when I had opinions different than theirs “I thought I raised you differently”.

That being said, older generations have seen a lot of terrible things and still carry that trauma. My parents actually didn’t but I think they were still influenced by their parents who DID see all kinds of war and hunger and dog-eat-dog cruelty. It makes sense that they are prudent about everything, it doesn’t make it right. Things change.

I hope we can do better, and I am really excited to see how younger Nigerians start to use their voice more and build new culture around new ideas.

Oh, I didn't know the question came up because of Nigeria particularly😄

Well said, I hope we can do better for our nation and ourselves. Most especially, not drive my own kids crazy!
