Golden age for erotic thriller was late 1980s and 1990s. And it owed its popularity to a single company - Blockbuster Video. Its chain in USA replaced most of mom and pop video stores, creating near-monopoly for video rental market. Blockbuster, trying to maintain it on national level, tried to adjust its policy to the most conservative areas of USA and therefore banned not only porn, but any films that weren't rated over R by MPAA. Customers that wanted sexual content had to settle for R-rated erotic thrillers and the huge demand created huge supply in the form of usually cheap low budget erotic thrillers with occasional high budget production like Basic Instinct and its clones. Arrival of Internet streaming in early 21st Century brought easily accessible explicit sexual content to American homes and ended this trend.
