Hmm...the tobacco doesn't clog up the pipe per se...it's the mixture of condensation and the tar/ashes that would clog up a pipe during smoking.
Condensation happens when the briar pipe is burning too hot, due to either saliva re-entering the pipe from the mouthpiece during smoking (happens to me sometimes when i'm clenching the pipe in my mouth. I hear the salivation goes away as one grows older...the body gets drier...a sign of bodily wear and tear), or from the tobacco being too moist.
But after every smoke the pipes are cleaned with pipe cleaners dipped in white rum.
I smoke cigarettes often and cigars occasionally. Not so much a heavy smoker anymore. The pipe has always been something I've wanted to try, thinking as a way to remove a few more cigarettes out of my life. Cigarettes are far too convenient. Can see the pipe ritual being beneficial. More of an event than a crutch.
I use glass pipes for weed. They get all gummed up and clogged really fast. To clean those I use butane, it goes through a filter, then I evaporate the solvent, and I'm left with a substance similar to hash oil or resin containing leftover THC that was stuck in the tar and whatever else. Can do it with alcohol as well but the evaporation process takes more time.
I think you'll enjoy pipe smoking very much. Since you're in Canada you should mainly be able to get American blends; it'll be harder to get the ones in my video as they are mostly English or European.
I know of a good smoke shop a few hours away (I choose to live in the middle of nowhere). Plenty of imported cigars so I'm sure I'd find a good selection. Costly though. They like to tax here and try to ruin the fun. Surprisingly, once weed was legalized and taxed, the prices still beat the black market.
Here's a the site of American Blender GL Pease. Their blends are exceptional: https://www.glpease.com/Articles/Latakia.html (i was reading about the Latakia leaf, which has become my favourite, found in the Peterson's Nightcap and Macbaren Latakia Flake that i love)
Crazy internet already has me going down the Kinnikinnick rabbit hole. Was looking for first nations sources. Their tobacco products are usually top notch, pure, organic; all that good stuff.
Sorry to bombard you, but just wanted to introduce you also to Matches860, rest in peace.
He was the first guy on youtube to inspire the youtube pipe smoking community. Savineli even created a pipe in honour of this man...called "The Friday Savineli".
