For the most part Hive is a blogging platform and that's about it.
With the various dApps, games and websites, that seems to be changing. At least from the traditional blogging side.
For example there is d.buzz, which is a Twitter-like microblogging platform. There was also musing.io, which is a Quora-like Q&A (Questions and Answers) platform. Musing still exists, but nowadays it is using its own blockchain (Musing Chain).
There was d.tube, which also still exists, but nowadays it is using the Avalon blockchain.
If the other dApps begin to use their own blockchains, then the Hive blockchain will probably really remain as a blogging platform.
