National Correctional Consciousness Week: A QuizBee to 3K

Hello, Hive Fam! Welcome to my 4th blog featuring the National Correctional Consciousness Week (NACOCOW) 2023, hosted by the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) Danao City, at Cebu Technological University Danao Campus.
The Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) initiated a correctional consciousness to educate the youth about being a Jail Officer, their duties, the perks of working in the organization, the qualifications of becoming a jail officer and of course their primary goal which is to educate the youth about the correction's role in the community. With it's theme: "Dekalidad na programang pang-piitan tungo sa hangad na pagbabago at kaunlaran [Quality jail and penology programs through aimed change and development]", they highlighted how their organization and inmates worked with both public and private organizations in order to make their time inside the cell more productive and to foster a sense of community involvement, which will prepare them for their future release, for them to be able to embrace a new life within the society.

The Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) discussed the role of Cebu Technological University Danao Campus in preparing their inmates' lives once released. The University offered an extension program through the initiative of the school organization, a training in baking production. It is CTU's pride of giving our inmates the chance for renewed life, through this extension program. They also have discussed all about the BJMP correctional facilities throughout Region 7 which comprised Cebu, Bohol, Negros Island, and Siquijor. There continuous effort to reform inmates really changed the lives of those persons in conflict with the law. Another thing they discussed, is that they convinced us to become one of them. The Regional Director once said that, " I hope to see you inside the BJMP". We all laughed out of those statement. I want to see you as a jail officer soon in our organization not as an inmate, he added. And everyone laughed. After the Regional Director's insightful speech, the host then discussed the qualifications of becoming a jail officer, click this link for more information if you want to join the noble profession of jail officers or refer to the information provided below from BJMP Region 7 website.

Throughout the forum, as we near to the end of the discussion we are asked to post our question regarding the recruitment process. The dialogue was very productive. After the focused discussion the BJMP personnel distributed snack, which was a bread made by the inmates of Danao City Jail. It was truly delicious, a quality product which can go shoulder to shoulder with big brands in the industry.

Afterwards, we are then encouraged by our teacher to participate in the quiz bowl competition of the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology together with my classmates, at first we were hesitant since we will be competing with our seniors which is the 4th years and of the other participants from different departments, such as that of engineering, technology and management and entrepreneurship, but still we risk the chance.

During the first round which is the easy round we all managed to wipe out all the questions, but as we move to the average round, some were eliminated. Yet, we are lucky enough to reach the final round and was able to finished the quiz bowl and was held the quiz bowl champions. The third placer received one thousand pesos (PHP 1,000), the second placer received two thousand pesos (PHP 2,000), and the quiz bowl champions received a three thousand pesos (PHP 3,000) in cash.

Overall, it was a very nice experience being able to know all about the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology's noble cause of uplifting the lives of their inmates through trainings and partnerships with the schools through extension programs of public institution such as that of Cebu Technological University Danao Campus. It also posed awareness of the real score of the BJMP, which is not just a mere correctional facility but a safe haven for person's deprived of liberty, to change themselves to become a better citizen of a law abiding country.
