MARCH 24, 2023 - AURORA BOREALIS IN UTAH

I'M ALL OUT OF ORDER IN THESE BUT OH WELL...

Sometimes crazy pays off.
Back on March 24th around 11:30 pm as I was drinking my post indoor soccer protein shake and scrolling FB I was seeing a lot of posts of the northern lights and I was hoping it would be strong enough for Utah. Sure enough I saw that it was at 8.3KP, which is really, really high.
I quickly changed into some warmer clothes, even leaving my soccer socks on as an extra layer for warmth, and grabbed my camera bag and tripod and headed out.
The only place close enough to me that would give me a chance was Ogden Valley. As I drove up over Trapper's Loop, it was completely cloudy and very foggy. My only hope was that once I dropped into the valley the fog would go away and I'd see a few stars and any bit of the sky through some thinner clouds. I got down to the intersection of Trappers and 39 and rolled down my window to look out for stars, and sure enough there was a small window just to the northeast of Powder mountain!
I knew instantly where I'd go.

I pulled up to my spot, quickly threw my camera on my tripod, took a test photo, and then went into a full body freak out!!

I quickly ran over to a spot to get a better composition, post-holing up to my knees in wet, heavy snow on the side of the road, in my very breathable, not water or snow proof running shoes. I didn't care that my feet were getting wet, I was capturing northern freaking lights!!

This is the same barn in this post, just a month earlier when there still lots of snow on the ground.

The first photo even got featured on the local news the next night. I'm practically famous now.
