Agreed on the 4x4. I visited in the winter and did just fine in a VW Polo.
Iceland F roads are a trip to themselves, I don't think I'd want to do it without a friend in another 4x4 for towing purposes.

Indeed! In the summers riding the F roads, generally not having bridges, may get even more dangerous and risky as in the afternoons the rivers get suddenly wider and deeper due to the melting snow and ice. I read about it online and then asked the rental company who basically confirmed the info correct ;)
