We can refer to depression as being a mental health condition, that is, a condition characterized by abnormal, uncontrollable and persistent feelings of worry, sadness, loss of hope and interest in some actions and these often put one’s health at risk thereby causing various health issues. Worry, on the other hand, means feeling uncomfortable, having excessive fear and nervousness for something. They are both known as mood disorders.
Depression, particularly is a problem people face in our everyday life especially youths and this has led to them doing things they are not supposed to do like excessive consumption of alcohol, which they think it would neutralize the effect or some might even commit suicide which is highly disregarding by God.
To handle a mental disturbing condition like depression, we have to follow the way of God by seeking his intervention for guidance, direction and counselling. There are biblical examples of people who struggled with depression. For example, people like Elijah, David and Job struggled with depression but they overcame it. In the case of Elijah, In I Kings 19:1-4, he was depressed when he confronted the prophets of Baal, he then fled into the wilderness, under a Juniper tree sitting, he asked God to take his life. He was experiencing the urge to die because of the depression that came over him but he was saved by God who came to his rescue by sending an angel to provide him with food and encouragement ultimately restoring his strength and purpose.
So, with this story of Elijah, we must cry to our God for mercy whenever we are depressed he would surely come to our aid to help us. Worry is just a mental disorder as depression, it can also be overcomed by seeking God intervention for guidance and counselling.
