The spirit and the prophet are different personalities. A prophet is defined by the spirit he carries. Though subject to the prophet, the kind of spirit determines the dimensions that the carrier (prophet) will operate in. As is written in scriptures, 1John 4vs 1, do not believe every spirit rather test them to know if they are from God, which automatically suggests that there also exist spirits not from God; evil spirits. And the carriers ( prophets) of these evil spirits are false!
And secondly a prophet is made up of prophet... prophet report to the spirit.
In a nutshell, reference was made to spirit in John, and not prophet because the prophet is just a carrier of the spirit. The spirit is the focus!
And according to the 1 correnthieans 14 vs 32,and the spirit of the prophet are subject to the prophets. If you watch clearly there is [s] because is not only talking to one prophet but all, and again everyone that is a prophet has the spirit of God so that is why John also look into the spirit and not the spirit. Psalm 139 vs 23 saying search me Lord and know my heart try me and know my anxieties... And lastly John 4 vs 24... saying God is a spirit and anyone that will Worship him will worship him is spirit and in truth. Thank you
