The bible is so much more than just a book full of doctrines, it's also a book that is contained with prophecies. There were so many prophecies that were recorded in the bible of each eventually came to pass. Many of the events that happened were actually prophesied about previously. God shows the picture of what the future holds especially to people close to him.
One of the reasons He makes these prophetic announcements is so that we can believe His word when they finally come to pass. Another reason is for us to make proper preparations especially if it an unfavorable situation so that we can be able to tackle it when it comes. This was the same thing that happened when Joseph was in the land of Egypt.
God used the king to tell him of what was to happen in the coming years. And God revealed this to him so that he could procure a solution to the problem when it finally arose. That's why they were able to cope with the situation when the matter came up.
Proverbs 16.9 - A man's heart deviseth his way: but the LORD directeth his steps.
As Christians, we shouldn't be totally clueless of our future. If we commit to frequent study of God's word, we will find out that He has a laid out plan for each and everyone one of us. So we are certain of expecting somethings later in life. Even generally, we know things that are most like to take place here on earth.
Some of them are already happening currently. Some of the things that are going on shouldn't really appear strange because they were already prophesied about.
