About the reason why God created the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, we need to first understand that the tree is not an apple tree and the fruit of the tree is not an apple. The bible says it is the tree of knowledge of good and evil.
When God gave man an instruction, he told man to eat of all the trees in the garden but not to eat of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.
Genesis 2:16 And the Lord God commanded the man, saying, “Of every tree of the garden you may freely eat; 17 but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall surely die.”
I believe God did not create man as a robot, God created man and gave man will power and the ability to chose.
The reason why God created the tree and gave man an instruction not to eat of it is because, man's will power can only be activated by choice. So man has to have options in order for him to proof to God that he will use the will power rightly.
But When the wife of Adam ate of the tree, instead of Adam to keep the ordinance of God, he rather chose to follow his wife and rebelled against God.
So when Adam had the choice to make as to whether he should obey God or not, he used his will power to disobey God. 'This is what revealed the disobeying act of Adam to God.
If God has not created the tree, Adam can pretend to be good and obedient. But the tree and the instruction reveals Adam's true nature.
