Right from time, there is a way that God set in place that mankind should follow. We don't live our lives they way we desire. There's a scripture in Proverbs that tells us that there's a way that seems right unto man but the end leads to destruction. This tells us that on own our we are lost.
It's just like a sheep that wanders away from the leading and guidance if it's sheep. Our obedience and willingness to follow God's path is for our benefit. The sheep is most likely to fall prey to predators. Our rebellion will do us no good.
Jeremiah 6:16 - Thus saith the LORD, Stand ye in the ways, and see, and ask for the old paths, where is the good way, and walk therein, and ye shall find rest for your souls. But they said, We will not walk therein.
This is a clear picture of what is going on today. People live there lives that is contrary to the way if good. God will never set a path for us would harm us. He sets a path for us we should be rest assured that it would lead to a benefiting end. It is pardonable to lose your way, however we should endeavor to retrace our steps.
