Ecclesiastes 9:5 (KJV) For the living know that they shall die: but the dead know not any thing, neither have they any more a reward; for the memory of them is forgotten.
It is now that we are living that we can work out the plan of God for our lives. The plan of God is what determines our future. Those who are dead cannot do anything again. Their work is finished. They are waiting for the judgement.
Hebrews 9:27 (KJV) And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment:
The Bible says that death is appointed. It might not happen now but it has been appointed to happen. Some people will not die before the Lord Jesus Christ returns. They will be alive and witness his second coming.
The thing that follows after death is judgement. The judgement will try our works. The purpose of God for our lives, how we were able to fulfill it, we will be tried. We should strive to have a good score card from God.
Ephesians 2:10 (KJV) For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.
We God's workmanship, which he has created in Christ Jesus unto good works. The good works were ordained by God that we should walk in them. We were created by God to do good works. That is what we are created for. Our future and our life is to fulfill that.
We cannot understand and know these good works if we do not believe in Jesus. God's design for us is found only in Christ Jesus. And these good works are the purpose and plan of God for our lives.
