Being a disciple of Christ means much more than simply believing in Jesus as the Son of God. It involves a commitment to follow all of his teachings, putting them into practice in our daily lives. In order to become a disciple, we must first be taught the ways of Christ and observe everything he commanded. This requires a willingness to learn, to listen, and to put aside our own desires and biases in order to align ourselves with God's will.
In Matthew 28:19-20, Jesus commands his followers to go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, and teaching them to observe all of his teachings. This charge to make disciples is not limited to the original 12 apostles, but applies to all who follow Christ. We are all called to share the good news of the gospel and to help others grow in their faith.
In Acts 11:26, we see that the disciples were first called Christians in Antioch. This name indicates a group of people who were following Christ's teachings and living according to his example. The term "Christian" has come to be synonymous with being a disciple of Christ, but it is important to remember that simply claiming the title of Christian does not make us a disciple. It is only by following and obeying all of Christ's teachings that we can truly call ourselves his disciples.
The dictionary definition of a disciple is "a follower of a person or idea who believes in and follows the teachings of a leader, philosophy, or religion." In the Bible, the word disciple is translated from the Greek word "mathetes," which means a pupil or learner. This emphasizes the importance of not only believing in Christ, but also learning from him and putting his teachings into practice.
So, being a disciple of Christ requires a commitment to follow all of his teachings, a willingness to learn and grow, and a desire to share the good news with others. It is not enough to simply claim the title of Christian; we must strive to live according to Christ's example and teachings in all aspects of our lives, obeying God's commandments, pleasing him in daily lives, doing good to all men, having compassion on the needy, visiting the orphans, visiting the windows, visiting those in prison, visiting those in affliction and being good generally.
