Variegated succulents - blessing or curse?

Surprise! I dyed my hair leaves!

That is what one of my Echeverias shouted to me this morning. I was amazed by this change in its colour, as there are leaves that completely turned into white. So beautiful in this version! 😍

I have had this Echeveria for years, it was one plant in the beginning but then I separated the long branches and planted them apart. And it happened also last year when the biggest plant just decided to leave our world, I saved some cuttings and leaves. They grow easily, even from a leaf. No worries, I have this type of Echeveria in several pots.

Some of the rosettes are variegated for a long time already, like this one:

IMG_20230501_130917.jpg

We could imagine that the plants are having fun and want to change their appearance, but this change is due to a genetic mutation. And if we think better - it is maybe not the best for the plant - to lose in that level its pigmentation. It is missing the chlorophyll cells in the white parts and the leaf is not nourishing the plant. Beauty could kill it in the end? I will just continue loving the new colour and hope for its long life.

Most likely some of the babies of this plant will also have variegated leaves, but I don't see a pattern as some of my new plants grown by this one preserved their green-blue colour without the white stripes and others got it. They are living in the community pot, together with other plants (the two rosettes on the bottom). I grew the smaller one just from a leaf. There are actually a few more, still smaller ones in this pot, between the other plants.

IMG_20230501_131229.jpg

The change in pigmentation can happen also in other succulents, and into a different colour. Several pots of Echeveria Pulvinata (my fuzzy Ruby Blush) show different behaviour. The smaller plants, that I got from making cuttings have the characteristic red and purple edges:

IMG_20230501_130328.jpg

The mother plant right now doesn't have those red shades on the edges of the leaves. The difference could be due to the position of the plant on the balcony, the big one is on the left side of the balcony and the other pots of the same plant are on the opposite side. They probably don't get the same amount of sun.

If you look carefully at the next photo, you will notice some white dots. Nothing wrong with the plant, no... It's that... oh, where should I start and not get upset hahaha. 😂

So, it's that my husband is feeding a sparrow and giving him dried bread crumbs every day close to this plant, so now I have bread crumbs all around... {sigh}

IMG_20230501_130455.jpg

The rest of the succulents are also doing well. The Aloe Vera grew very big, as well as the two Aeoniums (they were just small cuttings a few years ago that I took from the street). One is missing a branch as I accidentally broke it a few months ago while giving it a shower.

IMG_20230501_124738.jpg

Crassula Ovata also became a giant. It needs a bigger pot already... It is very heavy and is not stable so I have it on the floor as I am afraid it can fall and break its branches.

IMG_20230501_124928.jpg

As a comparison, I took a photo of this small baby (one of many that I got in January - thanks to their real mom 😇)

IMG_20230501_125245.jpg

It is how the baby is small compared to the giant Crassula.

IMG_20230501_125306_BURST1.jpg

"Elmo baby" is also here, with the baby gang. No, no buds at the moment.

IMG_20230501_125806.jpg

No buds from Elmo but the plant with the very long branches, as I called them tentacles, bloomed for weeks. Tiny, yellow stars from almost every stem, but I was late in taking some pictures. The majority of the flowers are now already drying up, and just a few are still in this shape. Well, one photo is better than none :D

Ohh so beautiful!! Me encantan las suculentas!!! My friend @karelnt is a biologist, a botanical specialist, and has a large collection of succulents and cacti. Seguro que si tienes alguna pregunta o necesitas consejitos él podrá decirte. 👌

Thanks for the heads up, and for recommending your friend :)
I started with the succulents a few years ago, they are here as a hobby and to relax. I was practising the piano this morning y he agotado mi mente jajaja.

Hermosas plantas. Yo cultivo muchas suculentas y me especializo en ellas. Cualquier duda me puedes preguntar.

Gracias 😇

Si, me dedico al mejoramiento genético

Congratulations! Your plants are so beautiful ❤️

I got this baby too

Yay, another succulent grower :)

It is a nice one you have got. And the cactus too 🌵

Woww I have the same, or almost the same in my flat, they are beautiful!

I loved the pictures and how well cared for they are and well, they also want to take the dye hahaha.

Big hugs @mipiano!❤️

The good thing with succulents is that they can survive even if I can't take care of them always. They are happy with water once a week. :)

Only if some bugs attack them, then there is a bit more work around them. 🤓

I changed the pots of two of them a few days ago because they had grown too much, they are happy!

That is nice! I will have to do the same with the Crassula, it needs a bigger pot. The problem is that every time I have less space on the balcony as the plants are growing hahaha. A little jungle it will be 😂

The change of pot is done little by little, if it is small, not to a very big pot, and the soil is a bit sandy. I love them, in Argentina I had a lot of them!😘

Wow. I’m very jealous of your skills! I’m still over here killing succulents like it’s my job 🤣

Hahaha, yeah, I remember you mentioned your succulent-killing skills hahahah long time ago. So it didn't change? lol

Hahaha! Nope, not really. I mean, maybe some I guess. I made a plant hospital, but now I just feel like they’re all dependent on it. Any of the ones that are solely dependent on me are dead or dying…but the plant hospital guys are doing great. I’ll share some pics today when I get home (if I remember lol)

I plant hospital? That already sounds like serious stuff hahaha

Lol! It’s what I like to call it anyway :)

It’s just an old wood cabinet with lights and water all set up on timers hahahaha! There are two space heaters with a thermostat controlling them as well, so they never get over or under watered, never get below 75F, and always have good light. The water still needs some adjustment, but i have it doing a small blast de agua once every 8 days :)

I figured maybe it was just the human element, making mistakes that was causing them to die - so I automated everything to see if a more steady hand could sustain them, and it definitely turned out to be the case!

This indeed IS serious haha!! Would never imagine a plant hospital like this, I thought you just take care of them a bit more seriously, but this - this is a whole science already! 😀

I see them in good shape. 👌

:) yes, im hoping to learn how to do it myself, maybe this setup will show me the patience I need!

Happy Hive PUD @mipiano 💪🐝

Teacher, could you help me with mine?, I'm totally lost, 😬 I don't even know what they're called, I've already started to write down their names with this post.
To make matters worse, the mower damaged the leg of the improvised table where I put them, and they all fell to the floor, let's talk quietly so my sister doesn't find out, the pots broke, they were badly hurt and I've been trying to revive them ever since. With a lot of talking. Because I just give them their space. And sometimes I play piano music for them, (yo no, tú) in the morning.
I haven't done a post about it either... but I could do it. I just feel sorry for my sister. Good thing she arrived at night and couldn't see that mess.

Good thing she arrived at night and couldn't see that mess.

hahahah, a good thing, indeed... but we can always tag anixaeva here 😂 (ok, without a tag :P)

Look, even if the plant broke some of the stems or leaves, you can just put them in the soil, they will grow roots and a new plant. Not with much water though. You see, those little plants in my community pot, many of them were grown from a leaf or cutting without roots.

In general, don't give them too much water, max once a week, but then enough water until the soil dries again almost completely. But if the pots broke, first you have to plant them in something, which can be an old tea mug or anything. Talking to them can be good, and music - well, if they don't improve you can blame the performer 😂

😂 esto tenía que subrayarlo (so, I edited) It seems to me that you are happy today and I like that, you are handling the stress correctly, between all that you need to practice, plus the work you have already agreed, plus everything else... you have gone to look at the plants that have turned white from seeing you appear hahahahaha

(estoy bromeando 😛)

🤗🌻...and 💙

Ooow, an edit? 😂

{y no paran viniendo cosas, adicionales 🎶🎹🤐)

About the names - I have some invented names here hahah, for example, "Elmo baby" as when I saw it for the first time, with white buds, it looked like Elmo from Sesame Street 😆

Gracias

Les pondré nombres a las mías.

Hi @mipiano! Beautiful succulents, it's one of my favorite plants, they really catch my attention because of their weird shapes

Succulents are the best plants to have.

Little work around them, but beautiful results ;)

Looking lovely!

Agree :))

It surprised me, the white colour, as it's not just thin white strips as it happened with the other cutting. They are coming from the same mother plant though 😇

How beautiful and well cared for your succulents are. It is admirable!

I love it when the edge of its leaves turn red.

It's amazing the variety of succulents out there and how elegant they are, especially their flowers.🪷🌸🌸

Last year a friend who went to live in the United States gave me a succulent as a gift and I could not keep it healthy.🥺😔 The truth is, I didn't know how much water to put on it or how to take care of it. It got ugly. In fact, I painted a succulent in watercolor, so I wouldn't feel so bad.

I don't know if it is possible to recover it?

I think, they are a blessing! Jeje!

Thank you for sharing such a nice publication !

Maybe you overwatered it, the succulent you got? They don't need a lot of water, here in Spain I give them just once a week. And I have them on a covered balcony, they don't get water through the rain. (what I want to say is that it also depends on where a succulent is, if in a garden where there is a lot of rain, then they don't even need a lot of extra water.

I also like when they are blooming, but also the shape of their leaves is something that already brings satisfaction seeing them ;))

Thank you for reading and for your nice comment, @zupasteleria, I hope you are doing well 🤗☀️

I think that's what happened, I put too much water, because I live in a desert area where it never rains, very close to the Atacama Desert. Naively, I thought that for that reason I should water it more frequently.

The other thing is that I have it on the balcony of my apartment and there it gets a lot of sun. I never put it in the shade.

So, I will follow your recommendations to see if I can rescue it.

Thank you very much for your advice, @mipiano👍🏻😊🌸🪷

That Aeonioum looks so nice! <3
I like the photo of the giant and the baby :D

The Aeonium has its phases. It is sometimes in dying moments, and then I shower it and it gets back to life haha
I think it is just a drama queen 😂

I am interested to see how your Echeveria will be doing in some months, to see if it will get the white stripes or not ☀️

Wow, I didn't know those variations could get so marked. But I have observed in my mother's and my wife's succulents, color variations ranging from reds/oranges to greens in the plants that receive more direct sunlight... It's funny, always have been many succulents plants in my house, but I started to pay more attention to them since I'm in #Hive... Here are true fans of these plants! :)... Your beautiful "Crassula Ovata" (I think it is commonly called "Jade" here) is really spectacular ... Here we have two but they are not as big as those... A beauty!... This is a "succulent" article really ;-) Thanks for sharing @mipiano friend!

Soon you are also becoming a succulent lover&grower and have more of them than your wife or mother 😆
Hive can make miracles haha.

Crassula Ovata - yes, also can be called Jade tree. It was so small... a few years ago. Now I need again a bigger pot for it... one day when I have to move I will have some trouble moving all of them 🤐

Nice jade tree!

Thanks. When I see how much they have grown I almost can't believe it. It's like with children haha 😂

So pretty! I love the new change of color, it's pretty when it's green but a touch of othet color is not that bad. Gosh so lovely,nI love how they grow like a flowers. T

Succulents are pretty always, green or with different pigmentation, right? They become unique with these changes 😇

I really don’t know almost anything about that kind of plants 🪴, but I have one in my garden and I consider it very useful, it is an Aloe Vera . The plant has gonderful meditinal properties. You better read about the plant. I am used it for the skin and stomachache pronlems.

Me dio error y desapareció.

That is a really great selection of plants you have there.

I have just started similar in the conservatory. With a twist x
IMG_7562.JPG

How cute!

And the dino collection too 😂

Oh, the little yellow dinosaur hiding between the cacti is the sweetest 😇

LOL cheers,
