Mammillarias in their natural habitat, it was a good adventure.

The other day @ewkaw told me: You are worse than me :P, and I think I am, this Sunday as I told you I traveled out of the city to find mammillaria colonies, it was quite an adventure because of the weather, the heat, my car broke down, the walk we had to do in the mountains trying to find a good place for the pictures, the trip was expensive because my car broke down, but it was worth it.

The truth is that I still need to identify the species, they are very similar to a cactus that I have in my house but this one is smaller, and especially it is a type of hanging cactus, it is attached to the rocks and there it starts to grow, I thought about editing the photos in a different way, but I decided to leave them natural so you can appreciate the place where they grow, it is an ugly place and in a few words wild, the worst of all is that the colonies were very high, and there was no way to get close without the danger of falling from the mountain, I had to settle for taking the photos from below and with the zoom lens.

In this last picture we can see how they hang, and if you cannot distinguish their figure, in the next picture I zoom in so you can see how they hang from the rocks and the offspring come out on one side until they form colonies.

Some smaller cacti, which were rather solitary, were at the bottom and it was easy to take pictures, they were still about 2 meters away since I couldn't get close because of the type of soil, the rock is loose from the mountain and when you step on it, it moves and you can fall, and to protect my gear I kept some distance.

In case you are wondering how the place looks like with a more open picture, it looks like this, it is located next to the road, you can't see the size of the site well, but just compare the road with the mountain and you will get an idea of the place.

And this is not the highest part, the area that was inaccessible because of the height of the place must be at least 200 meters high, the climb is almost vertical so in reality I think it will be impossible to reach the high area, I will need to explore a lot before finding a safe way, the only problem is that it is about 100 kilometers away from my home.

On the way back I arrived at another volcanic area known as the Volcán Ceboruco, it is a beautiful place where it is very hot, but there are also cactus like the following one, it grows a lot and when it is adult it grows a kind of beard on the tips of its arms.

Finally, today I went to pick up an order I made yesterday at the nursery, they did a virtual sale and sold at half price, some plants I ordered two, one for me and the other for my niece, I leave the list of plants and as soon as I have time I will take pictures of them.

  • Huernia zebrina
  • Opuntia microdasys white
  • Ferrocactus Herrerae
  • Melocactus matansanuz
  • Euphorbia mammilaris
  • Sedum lemon ball
  • Sedum japonicum for my niece.
  • Echeveria Shaviana.

Damn it! While I was making the post they sold some plants again at half price, I had to order two more haha, as soon as I pick them up I will take all the pictures to show you.

Oh my... The way they grow between those big rocks. So cool!
And the zoom did pretty good job.
Thank you! I really like seeing how they grow naturally. The giant cacti are pretty cool too.

Maybe this will help with ID: cactiguide.com/cactus/?genus=Mammillaria

I had to order two more haha

🤣 of course you had to!

It's awesome to see them in their natural habitat, and it gave me a couple of ideas to make my garden look better, what I need is money money money to do everything I'm planning haha.

Ooohhhh are you planning a rock garden?

It is nice to see those Mammillarias in their natural habitat, this is the first time that I have seen such.

It was also my first time and I hope it will not be the last, there are still two more places I was invited to and there are different species, what I need is time because the trip takes two hours.

Great habitat pictures! Good looking new plants too :)

I am getting curious about many African succulents, the bad thing is that they are a bit expensive here.

I hope that soon I can go to a new place where there are other types of cacti.

Which African ones do you like most?
