Hello Hivers, I hope you are all well. Today I bring you a summary of the cacti of the genus Melocactus and their essential cultivation requirements. Melocactus is a small genus of cactus native to Central America and the Caribbean. They are widely cultivated throughout the world as collection plants due to their beautiful, generally globose to cylindrical stems and their blooms accompanied by an apical cephalium. They are cacti recommended for growers with some experience because they are very susceptible to radical rot due to excess humidity. Even so, many sources indicate that its cultivation is very difficult when in reality it is not entirely true.
Some Melocactus more than 8 years old:
To maintain a Melocactus, the following basic growing conditions are needed:
- They need to be located in full sun during the coolest seasons of the year. If temperatures get too high during the summer, it is recommended to provide them with partial shade.
- Irrigation widely spaced to avoid rot. They can be watered every 15-20 days or more without wetting the stems too much.
- 70-80% mineral substrate in order to allow rapid drainage of irrigation water.
- They prefer to grow in climates with temperatures between 25⁰C-30⁰C for much of the year.
- Occasionally affected by mealybugs, mites and various pathogenic fungi.
- Multiplication by seeds generally.
Hello Karel, this appears to be your second account. While many people do have more than one account on Hive, it would be better if you chose to post all your succulent posts here with just one account, such as this one, and use your main to post photography.
that's what I want to do.
