Monday 10th October was a national holiday in Suriname, so my family and I wanted to get the weekend before away from the bustle of everyday life and decided to go to Nickerie, Suriname's most western district. Because most hostels and apartments were already booked for the weekend, we had the option of staying from Sunday till Monday.
So there we were, leaving the city around eleven Sunday morning and spend four to five hours on the road, before arriving at our apartment. Because the guests before us had made a huge mess, the owner was still busy cleaning the space for us. Though we were hungry - which is why I forgot to take pictures - we waited outside and because of that started eating the home cooked packed meal.
When we were finally allowed to check in, we rested our eyes a bit and after half an hour to an hour, we woke up the rest of the party and decided to drive around, because we didn't have a set itinerary. We were either going swimming, sightseeing or having a stroll around the city center of Nickerie.
While sightseeing we received the great news, that there's a duck curry contest happening between some businesses, with a live band as entertainment after. No one had to tell us that twice and we drove back to the city center. Unfortunately they weren't selling the duck curry yet and we were hungry again, because of having to postpone our lunch earlier.
So we decided to go and search for some neighboring restaurants just to be sure, freshen up at our lodge and return in the evening. After asking around we were recommended to try out Okopi Bamboesie Grill & More and when walking in I became enamored by the aesthetic and vibes of the restaurant. Especially the murals, painted ceiling and use of natural resources for the furniture.
This restaurant served mainly Javanese cuisine, with some "western" options like fries, shoarma (Middle Eastern dish) and pasta. I actually fancied nasi kuning (nasi kunyit) and that's when I received my first disappointment: the restaurant doesn't sell it on its own, but only with nasi rames. The second option was bami goreng and that's when we were disappointed for the second time: we came to the conclusion that we had better bami, better soaoto soup (soto ayam) and better shoarma.
All in all, we enjoyed our Sunday outing: we got to spend some quality time with family, relished the home cooked meal and got to create new experiences. What did you have last weekend? Let me know in the comments below π€.
