RE: Exploring the Charm of Old and New in Jalan Besar

in TravelFeed3 months ago

What a beautiful city! Clean! I can't think of one urban center in the U.S. that is as clean as that.

I did note, though, Kitchener Road. I checked the history and it is named after Lord Kitchener...the very same man who committed atrocities during the Boer War. He herded people into concentration camps and was responsible for the deaths of many innocents, including children--it is said 22,000 children perished in the camps. It's an amazing lesson in human nature. One man's hero is another's villain.

Anyway, hope you don't mind that I reference him. Such a beautiful street named after such a man.

Thank you, @agmoore, for sharing this valuable information. I truly appreciate it and learned something new.

I’ve also noticed that many roads here in Singapore are named after historical figures I’m not entirely familiar with. This has inspired me to learn more about them, and I plan to share my findings during my next photowalk. Cheers!

My undergraduate degree is in history, and I taught it for a few years. I've forgotten a lot but that's the sort of thing that will jump out at me😇.
